Highlights
  • The Pink Street - Rua Nova do Carvalho is the official name of Lisbon’s Pink Street, located in the now trendy neighborhood of Cais do Sodre. This area was once Lisbon’s Red-Light District.

Lisbon, being a significant port city, attracted many sailors who came to gamble, drink, and seek pleasure.

Rua Nova do Carvalho was the hotspot, filled with gambling dens, brothels, and shady bars named after other port cities.

It wasn’t just sailors who frequented the area; it was also a gathering place for local criminals, streetwalkers, and prostitutes. Bet you didn’t know this quirky street had such a shady past!

  • Lisbon Cathedral - Known as Se de Lisboa, this is the oldest cathedral in Lisbon. Originally built as a mosque by the Moors in the 8th century, it was later converted by the Portuguese after the Moors were defeated.
  • Miradouro de Santa Luzia - One of the best viewpoints in Lisbon, offering a view of the city’s oldest neighborhood, Alfama.
  • Miradouro das Portas do Sol - The highest viewpoint in Alfama, Lisbon’s oldest neighborhood. From here, you can enjoy a stunning view of the Lisbon Cruise Ship port, the Tagus River, and the Vasco da Gama bridge, the longest bridge in the European Union.
  • Miradouro da Senhora do Monte - The highest viewpoint in Lisbon, offering a panoramic view of the city and its surrounding districts. You can also enjoy a beautiful view of St. Jorge Castle with live music.
  • Mosteiro de Sao Vicente de Fora - The first church built by the Portuguese outside the Royal Palace Territory. It now serves as the Pantheon of the Portuguese Royal family, where many royal family members are buried. The church features beautiful architecture and colorful tile decorations.
  • Panteao Nacional - The National Pantheon of Lisbon is a national monument where Portuguese heroes are buried. It includes the tombs of Fado singer Amalia Rodrigues, footballer Eusebio, and many more, including the cenotaphs of Vasco da Gama and Luis de Camoes.
  • Alfama - The steep streets of Alfama, one of Lisbon’s oldest areas, are lined with shops selling traditional crafts and cafes. The historic no. 28 tram winds through Alfama on its way up to the 11th-century São Jorge Castle. In the evening, you can hear melancholy Fado music in some of the area’s long-standing restaurants.
  • Chafariz D’El Rei - Chafariz de El-Rei, the royal fountain, is the oldest city spring and the first public fountain in Lisbon.

Built in the 13th century using the excellent waters of the Alfama slope, it was expanded by King D. Dinis. In 1487, King D. João II ordered the water to be piped to the fountain to supply drinking water to ships setting off for commercial and discovery expeditions.

At its peak, Chafariz de El-Rei had nine working nozzles, each serving a different purpose: one for filling all kinds of jugs and barrels, and others designated for specific social groups, including one for sailors.

  • Museu do Fado - You don’t have to be a fado fan to enjoy the Fado Museum. It’s more than a tribute to Lisbon’s musical genre (which was added to the World Heritage list in 2011); it also showcases the cultural and political environment in Portugal, especially in the capital, throughout much of the 20th century.
  • Praca do Comercio (Terreiro do Paco) - The Praça do Comércio is a large, harbor-facing plaza in Lisbon and one of the largest in Portugal, covering an area of 175 by 175 meters (574 by 574 feet), totaling 30,600 square meters (329,000 square feet).
  • Arco do Triunfo - The Rua Augusta Arch is a stone, triumphal arch-like historical building and visitor attraction in Lisbon, located on the Praça do Comércio. It was built to commemorate the city’s reconstruction after the 1755 earthquake. The arch features six columns and is adorned with statues of various historical figures.

Worth the price - Great option to see Lisbon’s highlights without dealing with all the crowds (and hills). Our guide was Rifat, a well-spoken and knowledgeable gentleman. He catered the tour to our preferences and even gave us lots of tips/recommendations after the tour was over. Yes, we could have seen the sights for significantly less than the 130 euro, but this was truly hassle free.

Awesome Lisbon with Masud Rana - Masud Rana was excellent. We were unsure whether to take the hop on hop off bus or a Tuk Tuk. The Tuk tuk was the only way to go as it got us to places in the city where busses could never go. Rana hit all the highlights in the 2 hour tour and took pictures of us as a couple which we hardly get to take on our own. One of the highlights was stopping in Alfama for the famous Ginjinha liquor served in a chocolate cup. Rana knew the proprietor and we stopped in for a few minutes. Masud knew the area so well and we got into very tight locations thanks to his knowledge and excellent driving. We had a great tour to see the highlights of the city and it gave us a feel for Lisbon as this was our first full day in the city. Thanks to Masud we found locations we went to via Metro later in the day.
