- Alfama - Alfama is one of Lisbon’s most authentic neighborhoods, characterized by its unique architecture with old, colorful buildings that exude joy and tranquility. As one of the city’s oldest districts, Alfama was established by the Arabs who named it “Al-hama,” meaning ‘source of warm water, good water.’ Experiencing Lisbon authentically involves wandering through the alleys and charms of this neighborhood, often considered the heart of the city. Strolling through Alfama’s narrow, bustling streets feels like being in a small village, where you can overhear neighbors chatting, listen to fado music echoing down the stairs, and view the Tagus River from a new perspective.
- Praça do Comércio (Terreiro do Paço) - Praça do Comércio is Lisbon’s most significant square, serving as the city’s maritime commerce gateway for decades. It was constructed on the site of the Royal Palace, which was destroyed by the great earthquake of 1755. The square is framed by buildings on three sides and opens to the south, facing the Tagus River. Historically, merchant ships docked here, making it Lisbon’s port.
- Igreja de São Roque - The renowned São Roque Church is located in Bairro Alto, at Largo Trindade Coelho, also known as Largo da Santa Casa, in the historic center of cosmopolitan Lisbon. Construction of the church began in 1506, adjacent to a cemetery where plague victims were buried outside the city walls, and it is dedicated to St. Roque, the protector against the plague.
- Mosteiro dos Jerónimos - Mosteiro dos Jerónimos
- Torre de Belém - Torre de Belém
- Padrão dos Descobrimentos - Padrão dos Descobrimentos
- Miradouro de Santa Catarina - The Santa Catarina viewpoint, also known as the Adamastor viewpoint, is perched on one of Lisbon’s seven hills and is renowned as a scenic lookout and retreat for observers. Tradition holds that from the 16th to 18th centuries, people admired the movement of ships, including the grand departure of the Portuguese royal family to Brazil, giving rise to the popular saying “see ships from the top of Santa Catarina.”
- Time Out Market Lisboa - The Ribeira Market began operations near Cais do Sodré in Lisbon shortly after the 1755 earthquake, but the building we recognize today was opened in 1882. Currently occupying about 10,000 square meters, the market initially featured over a hundred sheds used by fish, vegetable, and flower vendors. It originally served as the capital’s supply market, a role it lost in the early 21st century with the creation of the Lisbon Region Supply Market. Officially opened as Mercado da Ribeira, or 24 July, it transitioned into a retail market, with several areas adapted for other uses. Today, the market also hosts themed fairs, dances, and a diverse catering area.
