Great bus rides with lots of options Plus a river cruise - We actually took the 72 hour Hop on Hop off ticket and it was wonderful. Staff were very helpful and informative. Buses generally kept to schedule but with heavy traffic in Lisbon this is sometimes impossible, all five tours were great and the river cruise is fun and not as crowded as I thought it would be,

48hr hop on and hop off bus tour of Lisbon. - We booked the 48hr hop on and hop off tour across three lines via our hotel. There seemed to be two companies working in Lisbon with Gray Line - Cityrama and Citysightseeing both operating from a car park at Marquês de Pombal roundabout in the heart of the city and close to all the major hotels. Firstly we stood line to board the bus to go and see Torre de Belem. There were 3 to 4 buskers trying to sell us sunglasses and other tat to the passengers whilst we waited for our bus. The poor American women in front of us was hounded by these buskers to the extend that she just got on another bus just to get away from sellers. This was in full sight of the Cityrama staff who should have done more to look after their passengers. I’m sure a word in Portuguese have made these buskers move on! We boarded the bus which was clean and I downloaded the Cityrama App to use on the route. The App promises real time information, location, details of the stops and an alarm you can set when you get to the stop you want to get off. My wife went to find a pair of headphones as they hadn’t given the passengers any and we then chose the English commentary for the tour. It became clear that the commentary was running out of sync with our location and was mostly about points of interest we’d already passed. The timing of the commentary was out of sync all weekend, either way before or way after the site. We got off at the small castle at Belem although the bus had gone off route and gone a long way round to get there which was confusing. When we finished our visit we attempted to locate the next stop for the pick up. Their paper map was saying one thing and their App was saying another. In addition the Cityrama App completely failed to locate the bus on the live map as the trackers weren’t working. The buses were every 30mins so we clearly didn’t want to miss one and stand around for that time. We eventually walked back to an earlier stop and boarded a bus, where the driver explained that because of road closures they had removed certain stops from the tour. There was a small sign on the window of the bus, which was not pointed out to us as we boarded earlier. This process repeated itself the following day where the commentary was out of sync although the bus tracker did work this time so we could know when the bus was coming....at least for one of the buses. Finally we took their smaller bus up to the castle. They told us the bus took us right up to the castle, which is atop a very steep hill. We took the bus which dropped us at a stop near the top, however there were no directions to the castle or signage at the stop. It was only by using Googlemaps that we were able to find the stairs and alleys leading up to the castle, which was still some way. If you were elder or not able bodied you would have struggled the last 500 meters to the top. I don’t thing Grayline should advertise the bus service to the top as it leaves you somewhat short. Very dissatisfied, especially as you can catch a city bus right to the castle gates. My wife loves a city bus tour and confirmed this is the worst one she had ever done. To be honest you might as well save your money and just get the local bus or tram.

Don't waste your time and money (extended review) - I have used various bus operators, including Cityrama (Gray Line). Pros: The price is a little lower than with City Sightseeing. They have more lines available. Equal: The stops are quite similar. Not all of them are very useful however. They do stop at the large shopping malls. Cons: The bus drivers tend to skip a stop if the bus is full, or if they are too late (I think). When asked about it, they say another bus is right behind them, and to make up time, they alternate stops with the bus behind them. This is understandable, but doesn't work in practice. It's not like every stop has the same number of people waiting, some are more popular. This brings me to the next point, the buses run late very often. A bus should be coming every 30 minutes, but they do not. I understand that during peak hours, traffic is heavy and buses miss their scheduled arrival time. This makes planning difficult. Also, at one point, I was waiting for the bus for 1 hour. When calling customer service, they do not have a reasonable answer to give you, and even get angry somewhat and say you should just wait, and the bus is late because of traffic. I would figure however that the buses before and after the one you are waiting for, also have the same problems with traffic. Even though the bus is late, the interval between buses should not vary that much. I noticed the second day, they do not send buses from the starting point every 30 minutes, rather 45. The buses have no airconditioning, although the windows do open. On hot days (30 degrees), the temperature in the bus gets to 40 degrees though. This is similar with other bus lines, although the other ones have a shaded window. Audio quality is decent, although no one bothers to tell you that you need headphones to listen to the audio, and need to bring them yourself. They are not provided. There is no money back offered if you decide to forego the second day or any other day. When waiting for 1 hour, no compensation is offered. Considering the price of subway in Lissabon, and the average taxi or Uber fare, the price of a 48h ticket can get you around 4-5 taxi rides, 7-8 Uber rides or 42 subway rides. You can even take the regular bus which is is cheaper, and stops at most locations on the route. Update: if you just want to sit in the bus and take the whole route and see (not hopping on and off), an Uber will drive you around the route for EUR 20. If you go with 2 routes it's EUR 40. No audio though, but private ride.
