Challenge your beliefs and taste buds on this tour! - Do this tour! An excellent introduction to the history of Portugal down to present day immigration patterns, and how it has played out in food. Joao (Johnny) was both knowledgeable and fun, and clearly had wonderful relationships with the restauranteurs on the tour. Both your beliefs and taste buds will be challenged (in a good way!) If you are going to be spending a few days in Lisbon, would highly recommend doing this tour on the first day; it will inform the rest of your stay.

Fabulous food tour! - Our host or guide, João, was just awesome! Very fluent in English, very knowledgeable, a whole heap of fun, highly responsive, encouraged questions, just such a delightful and entertaining personality! And of course, the food was simply delicious. We learned a lot, ate even more, had a lot of fun, walked off some of our calories at the same time, highly recommend!

Fascinating and Informative - Ines was an experienced and knowledgeable guide, well versed in the cultural and political. We tried foods we would never have found on our own. Loved the cachulpa, and would have gone back if our schedule had allowed. Stopping at a Brazilian market, I picked up unsweetened guava and passion fruit juices to enjoy later. We even got to try baobab fruit juice from a vendor. Come hungry because you will be very well fed.

Great food and a wonderful guide - This was a wonderful tour for both the food and our excellent guide, who provided a wealth of information on the the food, of course, but also on history, culture and her personal experience.

Favorite food tour - João is an excellent guide - to Arroios and the colonial impact on food and migration in Portugal. The tour was small and felt well-organized or planned and thoughtful. Loved the food and also the information about the neighborhood and events influencing food and migration trends locally.

This was my favorite part of my vacation - I had the most amazing time on this tour! I learned so much and got to see so many unique places. Being able to have an insiders perspective really made this tour special and being to taste the experiences while also learning about the guide (Ines was so fantastic!). Cannot recommend this tour enough!

So much more than a food tour - As advertised this tour took us on a walk through Lisbon with a focus on the influence of Portugal’s colonial past on its cuisine, and the tour delivered as promised. We were fed good food, which was well explained, taken to interesting places you would never find yourself as a tourist, taken into some of the kitchens to see the food production, and served drinks, including wine. Although a 4-5 hour tour may seem daunting the time never dragged, and we stopped regularly to sit down and eat. Additionally, our guide Ines gave us so much more than just an insight into food. Along the journey Ines weaved in information about Portugal’s colonial past and more recent immigration experience and we learned about its impact not only on food but on the general culture and make up of Portuguese society. Ines was informative and entertaining. This tour is highly recommended and I am so impressed with Culinary Backstreets they will be one of the first activities I will look for when researching any future travel plans.

Eating our way across Arroios - Our tour of the Arroios neighborhood with Joao (aka Jonny) was fun, informative, and most of all delicious! We sampled food with roots in Brazil, Cape Verde, Mozambique and Goa. We particularly enjoyed eating in small, family-owned restaurants that we never would have found on our own. The highlight was an introduction to Cachupa, the national dish of Cape Verde. Muito Gostoso!
