A Deeper Look at Portugal's Culinary Landscape - I've been following Culinary Backstreets -- the publication -- for years and was delighted to finally take a tour with them! Kika, our local guide, was tremendously knowledgeable about Portugal's history and culinary traditions, open and honest about its colonial past, passionate about small businesses, and willing to go above-and-beyond to accommodate the group's diverse dietary needs. To boot, Kika is a professional educator and told the story of Portugal's colonies' food in a way that was accessible and easy-to-understand for a variety of learners. Finally, the food! Come hungry, because this tour spans half a dozen countries and nearly as many eateries. From African stews to Brazilian pastries and rich Goan curries, you will get your fill. If you want to go deeper than codfish croquettes and egg tarts, Culinary Backstreets is the way.

Highly Recommended - The tour was brilliant! Our guide, Joao, has deep understanding of the colonial history and clearly also has an appreciation for the restaurants we toured and the hard-working owners. The food and drinks were delicious!

Awesome! - I found this tour incredibly insightful and Kika did a wonderful job of educating us on the history of Portugal and its colonies and how their relationship across time has influenced cuisine both in Portugal and its ex-colonies. The stops we had to taste food were well picked both to illustrate the concepts shared and were delicious in their own right. Overall the quality of the tour was excellent and I would gladly do another tour with Culinary Backstreets and with Kika in Lisbon.

7th tour was as great all all the previous ones! - Don’t walk ( even though it’s a walking tour) but run to these! They are the best! This was our 7th ( did our 8th in Porto a couple days later) and it was as great as all the others we’ve done. It’s a great way to see the city/area while eating fantastic and unique food while enjoying fun company along the way. Every guide we’ve had the pleasure to be with has been informative, engaging, and fun….like you’re walking around with a long lost friend while meeting new friends along the way! Love these md you will to!!

Awesome tour especially to places not on other tours - Excellent food and nice to link dishes to their history. It was great to visit places I wouldn't even have known to go to on my own. Would do another culinary backstreet tour in another city!
