This stop will delve into the intersections of LGBTQ+ history in Portugal and the regulation of sexuality and gender, tracing its origins back to colonial times. The discussion will include the impact of Indigenous erasure and colonial marital laws on these regulations.
• Graca & Sao Vicente - A brief stop will be made to appreciate a mural commemorating the Carnation Revolution. Here, participants will learn about the dictatorship, the historical context leading to the revolution, its progression, and its enduring influence on Portuguese society.
• VALSA - VALSA, an immigrant and queer-owned cultural association, offers the chance to enjoy artisanal sourdough pizzas while immersing in Queer culture. This venue is a significant hub for the LGBTQ+ community, blending flavors, art, and authenticity. It’s an ideal spot to experience local queer nightlife in a relaxed atmosphere and connect with locals.
• R. Damasceno Monteiro 75B - The tour concludes at a queer-owned bar, where the contemporary queer scene in Portugal, particularly in Lisbon, will be discussed. The conversation will emphasize the importance of associations and collectives in leading crucial discussions and exploring solutions for the LGBTQ+ community. Additionally, the role of immigration in bringing a decolonial perspective, shifting from traditional norms to better serve a diverse community, will be highlighted.

This experience will immerse you in Lisbon’s Queer nightlife, creating connections within a welcoming small group. You’ll witness a open-hearted community come to life while learning about Portuguese history and truly experiencing queer venues and associations in Lisbon. It’s a beautiful blend of knowledge and the simple joy of experiencing, talking, and meeting new people.

We reveal the often hidden truths about our country and culture, with a particular focus on sharing the perspectives of Black and Indigenous people within Portuguese history. And, of course, we’ll share plenty of laughs along the way.

The heart of this experience is the ambiance of each venue. You’ll visit 3 to 4 bars, venues, and cultural associations that are essential to the LGBTQ+ community in Lisbon, learning their stories while enjoying tapas and drinks.
