- Basilica de Nossa Senhora do Rosario de Fatima - Once a small village, Fatima has transformed into one of the most esteemed pilgrimage sites. It gained fame in 1917 when three young shepherds reported visions of the Virgin Mary. Since then, it has become a vital hub of Catholic devotion.
The main attraction is the Sanctuary of Fatima, a stunning complex featuring the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary. This sanctuary is a significant landmark for believers, drawing millions of visitors each year who come to express their faith and gratitude. While exploring the sanctuary, visitors will discover not only the grand basilica but also a series of chapels, gardens, and monuments that provide a space for reflection and spirituality.
- Batalha Monastery - The journey continues to the Batalha Monastery, a magnificent 14th-century structure that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This monument is an outstanding example of the artistic and architectural heritage of the late medieval period.
During a visit to the monastery, visitors can explore the Founder’s Chapel, the final resting place of King John I, Queen Philippa of Lancaster, and the renowned Prince Henry the Navigator.
- Nazare - The colossal waves of Nazaré are among the world’s most spectacular natural phenomena and a major attraction of the village! They primarily occur at North Beach, due to the Nazaré Canyon, an underwater trench over 5,000 meters deep that enhances the waves’ power.
The best vantage point to witness them is the Forte de São Miguel Arcanjo, which offers a fantastic viewpoint and a small museum dedicated to surfing, featuring boards from legends like Garrett McNamara, who put Nazaré on the global map by surfing a nearly 30-meter wave.
The ideal time to see the giant waves is between October and March, when Atlantic storms generate the largest waves. Besides elite surfers, the event draws thousands of visitors and photographers. If visiting during this period, it’s a must-see!
- Obidos Village - The medieval village of Óbidos, founded in 208 A.D., is fondly known as the “city of wedding gifts” in Portugal, as it was presented by King Dinis to Queen Elizabeth on their wedding day in 1282. With a guide, visitors can explore one of the traditional wine shops to taste the famous Ginja liqueur. Then, take time to wander through the charming medieval fortress of the village, with its narrow streets, colorful houses, and gothic doors and windows adorned with flower pots and beautiful tiles. Enjoy a snack or browse the small shops offering a variety of exquisite handmade ceramics before returning to Lisbon.
