Fatima and Obidos Tour - Our guide Hugo picked us up at our Lisbon Hotel and proved to be an informative and entertaining host during our trip to Fatima, Nazare and Obidos Castle. We learned a great deal about past and present Portugal. Hugo was very familiar with the sites we visited, adding anecdotes and stories that enhanced our experience. Amazing day! - My elderly mom and I were lucky AGAIN to have the same tour guide and driver for this trip to Fátima and Obidos! Rui, made our day to Fátima and Obidos truly amazing as we were the only passengers which made trip even more special! As usual, Rui was patient and always helpful! We visited the Sanctuary and was able to attend mass which was special for my mom. We had a chance to eat lunch and didn’t feel rushed at all. Although we didn’t visit the village of Francisco, Jacinta, and Lucia, Rui did take us to two towns with the most stunning churches! We went to the town of Batalha where we visited a 14th Century Dominican monastery of Santa Maria da Vitória. I did not expect to be wowed by its Gothic and Manueline style architecture. Truly a beautiful church! We then visited Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Alcobaça in the town of Alcobaça and it too was very impressive! It was nice to see a small Christmas market in the center square. Our last stop of Óbidos which was nice to walk through despite all the visitors wanting to see the all the Christmas decor. Grab yourself some hot chocolate, roasted castanhas and sip on some Ginja D’Obidos! Thank you for everything, Rui!

Pilgrims and Castles - This tour was a lot smaller than usual, so Rui our gracious tour guide tailored everything to our needs. We wanted a little more time for lunch - no problem. He even added an extra stop at Alcobaca Monastery that he thought we would enjoy because of the remarkable architecture and he was right. Riding with Rui was like touring Lisbon with a good friend. Fatima was a lot bigger and more spectacular than I ever imagined - a sprawling plaza, a new and old basilica. A few faithful were shuffling along on their knees to honor the Blessed Mary. The Little Chapel of Apparitions where the Virgin Mary appeared is not so little - it's the same size as most Catholic churches in the U.S and very modern. We sat there at 11AM waiting for mass to start but mass was actually in the new, modern basilica - easily the largest mass that I've ever attended. Plan for a 90 minute mass if you go - it takes a while for the massive crowd to receive communion. Obidos Castle was both quaint and awe inspiring at the same time - a lot of shops and restaurants surrounded by the stone walls of a centuries-old castle-fortress. Next time we will walk along the perimeter of the castle but this isn't for the faint of hear as there are no guard rails and it's possible to walk right off the edge if you're not paying attention. A long day of walking, touring and of course eating. We definitely got our money's worth. Thank you, Rui!
