- Terreiro do PaƧo - Rua Augusta was seen as Lisbonās gateway to the world, symbolizing a āportalā to the cityās mysteries. Passing through the arch, one transitions from darkness and ignorance to the light and wisdom that Lisbon offers. Be enlightened by its stories.
- Lisbon Cathedral - This church was built in the 12th century after the conquest of the Moorish city, replacing a mosque that once stood there. It is the only church in Portugal with a āHoly Doorā and one of the few in the Christian world. Why? Come and find outā¦
- Museu de Lisboa - Teatro Romano - Discover the Roman Theatre, constructed in the first century during the reign of Emperor Augustus. The Roman city was named Felicitas Iulia Olisipo. Augustus bestowed this name upon the settlement during its ennoblement between 31 and 27 BC. Following the conquest of Hispania, peace was established in the empire, fostering intense commercial relationships with various Roman provinces. Olisipoās wealth, primarily from fish farming, and its strategic location made it the maritime capital of Lusitania. Abandoned in the fourth century, it was rediscovered in 1798 after the 1755 earthquake during Lisbonās reconstruction.
- Castelo de S. Jorge - Visit S. Jorge Castle, situated in the old medieval citadel once inhabited by the Moors, who fortified it for defense. When D. Afonso Henriques, Portugalās founding king, captured the castle in 1147 after a three-month siege, he expelled the Muslims and opened the castle to Christianity. If you wish to tour the castleās interior, you can ask your guide to purchase tickets for you (not included), as they have āfast trackā access, allowing you to avoid long lines.
- Miradouro de Santa Luzia - At the Santa Luzia Viewpoint, one of Lisbonās most beautiful, you can see the cityās oldest neighborhood, Alfama. On clear days, you can also see the Arrabida Natural Reserve, 50 kilometers south of Lisbon. The church in this small square is the āNational Headquarters of Portuguese Knights of Malta.ā What is their mystery?
- Alfama - Explore Alfama, the oldest and one of the most traditional neighborhoods in Lisbon. Its name comes from the Moorish word al-hamma, meaning baths or fountains.
- Bairro Alto - Ascend to this part of the city to get an idea of what you can do in Lisbon for the rest of your stay.
- Largo do Carmo - Located in the Chiado area, Largo do Carmo is known for its historic jacaranda trees. The square is home to the ruins of the Convento do Carmo, built in the 14th century, which now houses the Archaeology Museum and the Carmo Museum.
- Elevador de Santa Justa - From the top of this neo-Gothic structure, built in 1902, you can enjoy another view of Lisbon and Rossio Square. Contrary to popular belief, the engineer Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard, not Gustave Eiffel, designed it. However, Ponsard did apply some techniques and materials already used in France.
- Rossio Square - Discover the darker side of this squareās history in Lisbon. Sadly, Rossio Square has a very dark past, as it was the center of the Holy Inquisition in Portugal. Most public punishments, tortures, and executions took place here. Being summoned to Rossio was never a good omen. Learn its stories. This is also where the tour concludes.
