On this excursion, we’ll explore the iconic National Palace of Queluz, constructed in the 17th century by Peter, brother of King Joseph I. This architectural marvel became a prestigious royal residence after Peter wed his cousin Maria, the king’s daughter.
The palace has been the stage for lavish celebrations organized by the aristocracy that included bullfights, firework displays, music concerts, and grand dancing serenades. Notably, it was in the confines of this palace that royal family planned their escape to Brazil amidst the first Napoleonic invasion. Interestingly, it also saw the birth and demise of Brazil’s emperor, Pedro I.
In Mafra, we’ll explore a grandious complex that includes two palaces, a convent, and a basilica built by King John V between 1717 and 1734. This ambitious project, executed at a startling distance from Lisbon, required enormous resources.
After departing from Mafra, there will be an opportunity to visit Ericeira before we return to Lisbon. Ericeira, a quaint fishing village, is renowned for its stunning beaches and popular surf spot.
- Tickets for the two palaces are 19 euros per person, 13 euros for people over 65
- A minimum of 2 people per booking is required
