- National Palace of Queluz - This is the first monument to visit, it takes around 1:30h to visit. I’ll be waiting for you for the next monument. The National Palace of Queluz, also known as Queluz Royal Palace, is a Portuguese royal residence, in the municipality of Sintra, which was built as such between 1747 and 1760 on the project of the architect Jean-Baptiste Robillon and at the behest of Prince Pietro (Pedro) III (1717-1786) husband of Queen Maria I (1734-1816) who transformed a pre-existing country residence. Called the “Versailles of Portugal”, the palace was used above all as a place of entertainment for the royal family: concerts, bullfights and fireworks were held there, especially on the occasion of religious holidays or other events. Queen Maria I lived here for many years, but otherwise the palace was not very frequented by the royal family. It is still used for concerts and as a reception place for foreign heads of state, it also houses the Portuguese School of Equestrian Art. Ticket costs 10eur - Palácio e Parque Biester - Palace that was restored and opened on 2023 - Castelo dos Mouros - History shows that from 5,000 BC there was the occupation of this area by the Neolithic communities, thanks to objects that remain to this day which demonstrate this fact. In 1200 BC there was also a village in this place, which left numerous ceramic fragments. In the 8th century, the Muslim conquest of Al-andalus began in the Iberian territory. In the 10th century the castle was founded, administered by the caliphate of Cordoba. In 1147, the Arab domination of the castle ended, thanks to the conquest of Lisbon by D. Afonso Henriques. In 1287, D. Dinis donates the city of Sintra to Queen Santa Isabel. In 1995 the Castle and the Serra de Sintra are classified by UNESCO as a Cultural Landscape - World Heritage. In 2007 the rehabilitation of the Castle begins, already in possession of Parques de Sintra and in 2013 the Castle opens to the public, with reforms and adaptations for visitors. ticket costs 8eur - Park and National Palace of Pena - In this monument, you will visit the beautiful gardens and the Palace. Built after 1840 by Maria II of Braganza (1819-1853), as a wedding gift for her husband, King Ferdinand II of Portugal (also known as Ferdinand II of Saxony-Coburg-Gotha; 1819-1885), on the ruins of a 15th century Gerosolimitan convent and designed by the German architect and baron Ludwig von Eschwege, the palace is under the protection of UNESCO, from which it was included in the World Heritage Site (like the entire historic center of Sintra) in 1995, and on 7 July 2007 he was elected one of the 7 wonders of Portugal. Now 2020 one of the 101 wonders for Lonely Planet. ticket costs: 7,5eur+7eur to visit the gardens and the palace. If you want, you can only visit the gardens. - Quinta da Regaleira - Splendid palace and chapel in romantic style immersed in a park with lakes, caves, wells and fountains. Built by Carvalho Monteiro at the beginning of the century as a private residence, the estate remained in private hands until it was purchased by the local council in 1997 With the help of the Italian architect Luigi Manini, he began to transform the villa and the surrounding property into the fascinating place we see today. It is difficult to imagine that a building of this size and pomp was, until recently, a private residence rather than a royal palace. The four-hectare property is just as interesting as the palace. It combines formal gardens with wild woods crossed by paths, decorated bridges, caves, lakes, waterfalls and fountains, all set between giant ferns and American redwood trees. The grounds also house a series of underground tunnels and two large wells that were once supposedly used in esoteric initiation ceremonies. ticket costs 8eur - Parque e Palacio de Monserrate - Another beautiful Palace with amazing gardens - Azenhas do Mar - amazing landscape - Farol do cabo da Roca - Cabo da Roca is the western most point of mainland Portugal and the westernmost Cape of continental Europe. It is located in the parish of Colares, municipality of Sintra. The site can be visited, not to the extreme but up to an area at an altitude of 140 m. The promontory forms the western end of the Serra de Sintra, precipitating on the Atlantic Ocean. Luís Vaz de Camões described it as the place “Where the land ends and the sea begins” (in Os Lusíadas, Canto III). [1] A stone motif with a plaque marks this geographical feature to all who visit this place. Its flora is varied and, in many cases, has unique species, being the subject of numerous studies that also extend to geomorphology, among others. In the area there is a lighthouse (Farol do Cabo da Roca). It is located in the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, in an area with easy access and a large tourist flow, with many people visiting it. On Sundays it is customary to meet different groups of motorcyclists. FREE entrance - Santuario da Peninha - Stuning point of view - Páteo do Petisco Torre - If you want, we can stop here so that you can taste several typical “portuguese tapas”. This is a traditional restaurant. After this meal, I’ll take you back to your apartment/hotel.
