Highlights
  • National Palace of Queluz - This is the first monument to visit, it takes around 1:30h to visit. I’ll be waiting for you for the next monument. The National Palace of Queluz, also known as Queluz Royal Palace, is a Portuguese royal residence, in the municipality of Sintra, which was built as such between 1747 and 1760 on the project of the architect Jean-Baptiste Robillon and at the behest of Prince Pietro (Pedro) III (1717-1786) husband of Queen Maria I (1734-1816) who transformed a pre-existing country residence. Called the “Versailles of Portugal”, the palace was used above all as a place of entertainment for the royal family: concerts, bullfights and fireworks were held there, especially on the occasion of religious holidays or other events. Queen Maria I lived here for many years, but otherwise the palace was not very frequented by the royal family. It is still used for concerts and as a reception place for foreign heads of state, it also houses the Portuguese School of Equestrian Art. Ticket costs 10eur - Palácio e Parque Biester - Palace that was restored and opened on 2023 - Castelo dos Mouros - History shows that from 5,000 BC there was the occupation of this area by the Neolithic communities, thanks to objects that remain to this day which demonstrate this fact. In 1200 BC there was also a village in this place, which left numerous ceramic fragments. In the 8th century, the Muslim conquest of Al-andalus began in the Iberian territory. In the 10th century the castle was founded, administered by the caliphate of Cordoba. In 1147, the Arab domination of the castle ended, thanks to the conquest of Lisbon by D. Afonso Henriques. In 1287, D. Dinis donates the city of Sintra to Queen Santa Isabel. In 1995 the Castle and the Serra de Sintra are classified by UNESCO as a Cultural Landscape - World Heritage. In 2007 the rehabilitation of the Castle begins, already in possession of Parques de Sintra and in 2013 the Castle opens to the public, with reforms and adaptations for visitors. ticket costs 8eur - Park and National Palace of Pena - In this monument, you will visit the beautiful gardens and the Palace. Built after 1840 by Maria II of Braganza (1819-1853), as a wedding gift for her husband, King Ferdinand II of Portugal (also known as Ferdinand II of Saxony-Coburg-Gotha; 1819-1885), on the ruins of a 15th century Gerosolimitan convent and designed by the German architect and baron Ludwig von Eschwege, the palace is under the protection of UNESCO, from which it was included in the World Heritage Site (like the entire historic center of Sintra) in 1995, and on 7 July 2007 he was elected one of the 7 wonders of Portugal. Now 2020 one of the 101 wonders for Lonely Planet. ticket costs: 7,5eur+7eur to visit the gardens and the palace. If you want, you can only visit the gardens. - Quinta da Regaleira - Splendid palace and chapel in romantic style immersed in a park with lakes, caves, wells and fountains. Built by Carvalho Monteiro at the beginning of the century as a private residence, the estate remained in private hands until it was purchased by the local council in 1997 With the help of the Italian architect Luigi Manini, he began to transform the villa and the surrounding property into the fascinating place we see today. It is difficult to imagine that a building of this size and pomp was, until recently, a private residence rather than a royal palace. The four-hectare property is just as interesting as the palace. It combines formal gardens with wild woods crossed by paths, decorated bridges, caves, lakes, waterfalls and fountains, all set between giant ferns and American redwood trees. The grounds also house a series of underground tunnels and two large wells that were once supposedly used in esoteric initiation ceremonies. ticket costs 8eur - Parque e Palacio de Monserrate - Another beautiful Palace with amazing gardens - Azenhas do Mar - amazing landscape - Farol do cabo da Roca - Cabo da Roca is the western most point of mainland Portugal and the westernmost Cape of continental Europe. It is located in the parish of Colares, municipality of Sintra. The site can be visited, not to the extreme but up to an area at an altitude of 140 m. The promontory forms the western end of the Serra de Sintra, precipitating on the Atlantic Ocean. Luís Vaz de Camões described it as the place “Where the land ends and the sea begins” (in Os Lusíadas, Canto III). [1] A stone motif with a plaque marks this geographical feature to all who visit this place. Its flora is varied and, in many cases, has unique species, being the subject of numerous studies that also extend to geomorphology, among others. In the area there is a lighthouse (Farol do Cabo da Roca). It is located in the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, in an area with easy access and a large tourist flow, with many people visiting it. On Sundays it is customary to meet different groups of motorcyclists. FREE entrance - Santuario da Peninha - Stuning point of view - Páteo do Petisco Torre - If you want, we can stop here so that you can taste several typical “portuguese tapas”. This is a traditional restaurant. After this meal, I’ll take you back to your apartment/hotel.

Wonderful day and would highly recommend - Outstanding tour! Our guide, Antonio, was the best, he was extremely knowledgeable taking time to provide history and context during tour. Antonio took us to the more popular destinations, as well as to some of the less known, but equally impressive sites. He took us to some amazing places for pastries, lunch and tapas. Antonio provided excellent suggestions but also wanted to ensure my wife and I were seeing/experiencing what we wanted. Overall, 5 stars and would highly recommend.

This is the absolute best trip for Sintra. - This tour was an amazing experience and Antonio was an incredible guide. He went above and beyond with showing me the area of Sintra and was very accommodating with letting me take my time to see each site at my own pace. In addition, he kept in touch and provided his own recommendations even after the trip was complete. Super nice guy and very knowledgable about the area and its history. This was the best tour I have ever taken through Viator and I highly recommend.

Best Tourist Navigator in Sintra—truly unforgettable experience! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🇵🇹🇵🇹🇵🇹🇵🇹🇵🇹 - This is a trip to remember. António maximized our time and experience at Sintra. He took us to sites that were less travelled and touristy and equally or if not more interesting landmarks such as Biester and Monseratte palace and top of the hill sites to get a 180 view of Sintra. We were not hurried nor rushed and António really wanted us to see the best of Sintra. We felt really safe and in good hands. Antonio knows Sintra inside out. He’s the best tourist navigator. We are so fortunate and will definitely book with him again when we return to Lisboa or perhaps travel to Madeira. He deserves Five stars, thank you Antonio!!!

So good- we have booked another private tour! - We were collected from our hotel in Lisbon by Antonio in his very comfortable Renault van, and spent most and the day around Sintra at palaces, castles and beautiful old restored homes. We visited the magnificent Queluz National Palace and gardens and got up close to the resident majestic Lusitano horses (ask Antonio about the gondolas!). We had a yummy tasting of fabulous Portuguese pastries at a Pastelaria. Then on to Palacio Parque Biester and its extraordinary painted walls that look like beautiful wallpaper in every room. This divine house was the where The 9th Gate was filmed (with Johnny Depp). Then onto Palacio Pena. Firstly to the cistern and Arab ruins of the castle, then up to the Palace. Thank goodness for Antonio. There is no parking, so he dropped us off at the gate for the shuttle bus to the top. It was a very interesting visit, seeing the holiday home of royalty, and the tiles which adorned floors, walls and ceilings, were on the whole, in excellent condition. On a clear day l understand the scenery is fantastic. We saw it in fog which was kind of magical. We texted him when we had completed our tour and he was at the gate in seconds to collect us as we stepped off the shuttle. Then on to the gloriously pink Palacio de Montserrat - amazing Moorish and Indian inspired architecture - just beautiful. The gardens were very pretty. Antonio then took us to Cascais driving down beautiful coastline and sand dunes with still operating light houses along the way. We saw some of Portugal’s Riviera and drove out to Cabo da Roca. Dinner at a local Tapas restaurant and then home. Antonio was very accommodating and very well informed. His information gave us a comprehensive understanding of Portugal’s monuments, history and contemporary issues. Well worth doing. So much so we have booked another tour from Lisbon - this time heading north!

Best Tour of Sintra! - Antonio is the perfect tour guide! He communicated with us several times ahead of the tour. He picked us up at our hotel at 8:40AM. His van is very comfortable. He showed us several major and minor sites in Sintra, including the National Palace of Queluz, the gorgeous Biester Palace, Castelo dos Mouros, Pena Palace, and much more. He let us modify the tour; we wanted to walk around the historic town for a bit, and he was very willing to change plans. Before the tour ended, he showed us some beautiful views of the ocean. The last stop was dinner at Páteo do Petisco Torre--and he helped select several tapas for us. This was one of our best days in Portugal!

Fantastic private tour of Sintra - highly recommend António’s service - We initially had a private tour booked with another company for Sintra, and they cancelled on us at the last minute. What initially seemed like a disaster was in fact a blessing in disguise, as it led us to Antonio! We had a fantastic day from start to finish. Antonio’s communication in advance was great and he picked us up on time from our hotel in Lisbon around 8:30am. His van is modern and comfortable and he is very familiar with the local roads. We visited the Queluz National Palace, Chalet Biester, the Moorish Castle, Pena Palace, Quinta de Regaleira and Cabo da Roca, along with a fantastic lookout off the tourist trail which offered incredible views of Lisbon and the coast. I really didn’t think we’d be able to fit all of this in within a day (I like to take my time taking photos and my girlfriend was struggling with a sore knee) but somehow we did without ever feeling rushed. Antonio helped us to buy tickets for the attractions and to skip a few queues, which was particularly useful for the Pena Palace (which was teeming with people!) After a long and thoroughly enjoyable day Antonio returned us to our hotel in Lisbon around 9:00pm, together with a great recommendation for dinner that night and also some restaurants and places to see for our next destination (Porto). Antonio was great company, very knowledgeable about all the attractions and we (two female travellers) felt very safe at all times. Antonio is fluent in several languages and he helped us out with our terrible Portuguese! We would absolutely recommend António’s service for anybody looking for a tour of Sintra, it was well worth the money. Thanks again Antonio - we will see you next time! Awesome tour with Antonio - Antonio was a terrific guide. We were on a cruise and he was very flexible with our timeline. He picked us up at the port and had a printed itinerary. He had very quick communication before the cruise and we were extremely confident about booking this outside of the cruise. We went to many places that Antonio described before we arrived at each site. He guided and let us explore on our own. We got some pastries to try and are now our new favorite. We highly recommend this tour.

A perfect day trip to Sintra! - Antonio is amazing. Gave us one of the most special days we’ve had as a family on vacation. Was very generous with his time and advice. All well letting us see everything that we wanted to see... Plus some hidden gems. He is incredibly knowledgeable, friendly, timely and yet easy-going. Kept us informed of the days timeline but never once felt pressure to rush or move on. Even with small kids, he let them and us enjoy every minute. Couldn't ask for a better guide. Was worth it 10 times over. If you come to Lisbon and want to go on a tour or day trip, book with Antonio. He's the best.
