- Bairro Alto, Bica & Cais do Sodre - As we stroll through Bairro Alto, we’ll stop at a viewpoint to admire the beautiful hills and landscape. We’ll discuss how the LGBTQ+ neighborhood changes from day to night, offering varied experiences based on access and privilege. We’ll also examine the lingering patriarchal and colonial attitudes in society. Together, we’ll ponder: is inclusion in Portugal truly universal? How can it be improved?
- Largo Trindade Coelho - Here, we will see the monument of Padre António Vieira and discuss the church’s role in regulating sexuality and its impact on societal attitudes towards homosexuality and other non-conforming expressions.
- Largo do Carmo - At this historic site of the Portuguese revolution, we’ll explore the country’s long-standing dictatorship and its influence on societal norms, enforcing a strict family model. We’ll also highlight the resistance efforts of key LGBTQ+ figures during this period.
- Praca Martim Moniz - At this location, we will discuss contemporary queer movements that challenge existing structures and raise important questions. We’ll also explore how immigrants are contributing new strength and perspectives to the LGBTQ+ movements in Portugal.
- Graca & Sao Vicente - The tour concludes at a queer-owned venue, where we will honor the Black queer resistance brought to the Graça neighborhood by Criolense Kitchen Club. We’ll also learn about the area’s significant role in the LGBTQ+ community.
