- Palacio Nacional de Mafra - Constructed in the 18th century by the decree of King João V (1689-1750) to fulfill a vow for an heir from his marriage to Maria Ana of Austria, or to recover from a severe illness, the Royal Convent and Palace of Mafra stands as Portugal’s most significant baroque monument. Made entirely of limestone and marble from the local region (Pêro Pinheiro and Sintra), the structure spans nearly four hectares (37,790 m2), featuring 1,200 rooms, over 4,700 doors and windows, 156 stairways, and 29 inner yards and courtyards. This splendor was made possible by the influx of Brazilian gold, enabling the King to support the arts and reinforce royal authority.
For the Royal Convent of Mafra, the King commissioned sculptures and paintings from renowned Italian and Portuguese artists, and all altar cloths, church vestments, and religious gold and silverware were ordered from France and Italy.
