Highlights
  • Western Approaches HQ Museum - The Battle of the Atlantic Experience - Western Approaches HQ is a secret WW2 bunker underneath Liverpool’s City Centre, close to The Town Hall.

Walk through hidden rooms and discover the stories locked in the wartime bunker that protected the tactics and secrets of the British Armed Forces plotting to bulwark the Western Approaches and aid the Allied victory.

Glimpse the documents and tools the forces used to monitor enemy convoys and inform the British government of their findings whilst keeping their intelligence secret from the enemy, including one of only two surviving wartime phones which had a direct connection to the war cabinet in London.

See where commanders and WRNS and WAAF personnel worked every day and night in the Map Room, the nerve centre of the Battle of the Atlantic. Here they monitored convoy routes and vital shipping lines, and pin-pointed enemy locations on a huge map laid across the table; total accuracy was necessary to enable the Royal Navy to contact and destroy the enemy.

The Map Room which was the nerve centre of the bunker has remained exactly how as it was left when the doors were closed on 15 August 1945.

Experience a self guided tour of the museum where you can walk through the corridors, sit at desks, play with typewriters and teleprinter machines, look at the telephone exchange and try on uniforms.

There is also a room at the end of the tour where hot drinks are available at war time prices and there are traditional games to play and a film to watch about life in Liverpool during the war.

What's Included
  • Receive an authentic identity card as your museum pass.
  • Enjoy free return admission for 6 months.
Additional Information

Western Approaches takes you to an unseen, clandestine world that held a significant position and function in a war-stricken Liverpool.

Presently, the bunker shines as a concealed treasure and time vault, preserved just as it was in 1945. A visit to the bunker not only sheds light on the crucial operations executed within its walls but also brings back the tales of the people who served and resided there.

Out of the 300 staff members who worked there at any given time, 80% were women between the ages of 17-22, showing the immense contribution, hard work, and skills they provided along with the functions they performed.

Walk through concealed rooms and uncover the stories stored in the wartime bunker that safeguarded the strategies and secrets of the British Armed Forces planning for the defense of the Western Approaches and support the victory of the Allies.

Although the bunker is a museum, we strongly support visitors to sit at the desks, handle the typewriters and telephones used by the team for an authentically immersive experience.

Fabulous Tribute To The Western Approaches - Fabulous look inside critical operations for securing safe passage of ships during the Second World War. Lots of authentic equipment and left original to the time. You understand the sacrifices of the British Royal Air Force and Navy

Surprise find! - Came across this after dropping my car off for a service and walking into the city centre, brilliant place, not only informative but also emotive when looking and reading through the vast amount of information and people’s stories who worked there. Well worth a visit, be that as a visitor to the city or a local like me, if local you can get a year pass which isn’t much more than a day pass, well worth it as will be back with the kids at some point.

A must visit. - Lets get this out of the way first; this is a MUST SEE place when you are in the city as it brings to life the outstanding work done by all those involved in making sure that the Atlantic convoys did get through; be they UK, Canadian or others. There was also information on the arctic convoys; again something never to be forgotten in our long history. And yes, we had family involved in both Atlantic and Artic convoy duty. Finding the place was a small challenge but oce inside the place is awesome. How people worked here under the huge pressure for so long is beyond understanding at times. The tour takes around 1.5 to 2 hours depending on how fast you read the huge amount of information provided. Take your time and there is much to learn here in the detail.

Great experience - Really interesting. It's easy to imagine life and work in those underground offices, as you wander from room to room, from ops center to offices to radio rooms, etc

Torquay Bill - Very interesting, informative and well presented WW2 museum. It highlights the very important work carried out during the conflict of the Royal Navy and Air Force and their close co operation. The additional Wrens section, when completed, will show a different and relevant view of women in the Royal Navy.

Great Tribute to the Men and Women - This is one of the best museums that I have ever been to. I should state you need a credit card to pay for a ticket as I learned the hard way. This building was the original location of the headquarters for the Battle of the Atlantic. I commend the museum for bringing the stories of the brave men and women who contributed to the Allied victory over Nazi Germany during World War II. It was a dangerous job and does not get the attention of other aspects of that war. I am not a museum person, but I was deeply impressed with this museum and can't recommend it enough. Personally, my favorite part of Liverpool.

Outstanding Museum - This is an outstanding museum and well worth making the effort to see it. Essential viewing for the younger generations who need to learn about what happened in WWII. Beautifully presented and maintained you really do get a great sense of how it was 85 years ago. Highly Recommend!
