What 'a good cup of coffee' really means! - Now I know what 'a good cup of coffee' - free of synthetic fertilizers and chemical pesticides - really means! On this Life in Loja tour of an organic coffee farm, we learned that organic coffee has to be shade-grown. Without the foliage of trees, the sun would quickly scorch the earth and require large amounts of (non-organic) fertilizer to restore nutrients. So these coffee farmers keep native trees in place to provide shade, and this has a positive impact on biodiversity sustainability. Our Lojano guide Jonathan also showed us how farming and processing are significantly different from that of conventional coffee. For me, a highlight was learning how organic farmers protect their crop from plagues. Hint: it involves Coca Cola bottles and red paint. You'll have to take the tour to get the full explanation! Never again will I consider ordering a quick 'to go' cup of coffee.

Get high on a coffee experience with this farm tour - Several years ago I was fortunate to take one of the very first coffee farm tours offered through Life in Loja and decided go again recently with a friend. This is still an excellent experience. Even though I thought I had heard it all previously I learned even more this time. Our guide - Jona - has superior English speaking skills so one can get maximum benefit from all that is said. I highly recommend this tour for anyone who has an interest in how coffee is grown, harvested, and prepared. Tip: if you are offered then don't pass up a chance to taste a ripe coffee cherry - they are surprisingly tasty!

Really awesome coffee tour! - A great experience that I recommend to learn more about the process of making Loja coffee from plant to cup! Jona is a punctual and professional guide and he speaks English very well and even a little French. He really has a very good knowledge of his tours and his region!
