Arrival in Lomé: A Warm Welcome

Stepping off the plane at Gnassingbé Eyadéma International Airport, I was immediately enveloped by the warm, humid air of Togo. The vibrant energy of Lomé was palpable, and I was eager to begin my adventure. My journey began with a warm welcome at the Hotel Residence Madiba, where the staff’s hospitality set the tone for the week ahead. As a wildlife photographer, I was particularly excited about the opportunity to explore Togo’s unique landscapes and cultural heritage.

The first day was a gentle introduction to the city, allowing me to acclimate and prepare for the days of exploration ahead. I spent the evening strolling along the sandy beaches of Lomé, watching the sun dip below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink. It was a serene moment, a perfect prelude to the adventure that awaited.

Exploring Togo’s Rich Heritage

The next morning, we set off for Agbodrafo, driving through lush coconut plantations. Our destination was the ancient slave dungeons, a poignant reminder of the region’s history. The experience was both humbling and enlightening, offering a deeper understanding of Togo’s past. From there, we continued to the Pedakondji fisher’s village, where I was captivated by the daily activities of the locals, their lives intertwined with the rhythm of the sea.

Our journey then took us to Glidji, the spiritual capital of the Guin group. Here, I had the privilege of meeting the chief priest of the holy forest, who shared the fascinating history of the sacred stones. The spiritual energy of the place was tangible, and I felt a deep connection to the land and its people. Later, we cruised on Lake Togo to Togoville, where the ancient German cathedral stood as a testament to the country’s colonial past. The king and his court welcomed us warmly, sharing stories and traditions that have been passed down through generations.

A Dance with the Spirits: The Voodoo Ceremony

One of the most thrilling experiences of the tour was attending a Voodoo ceremony in a local village. The air was thick with anticipation as we arrived, the rhythmic beat of drums echoing through the air. The chief priest welcomed us, and I watched in awe as participants entered a trance, their movements guided by the rhythm of the ritual songs. It was a mesmerizing display of cultural heritage, a dance with the spirits that left me in awe.

The following days were spent exploring the Sio River and its surrounding villages. Walking through Dzagle village, I was struck by the beauty of the funeral monuments and the ancient fetish tree, symbols of the community’s deep-rooted beliefs. A romantic cruise on the Sio River to Dvego village offered a moment of tranquility, a chance to reflect on the incredible experiences of the past week.

As my time in Togo came to an end, I felt a profound sense of gratitude for the opportunity to immerse myself in the country’s rich culture and natural beauty.
