Durlston Country Park, at the start of our journey, includes Durlston Castle and the Great Globe, both worth visiting on the way to Corfe Castle. From a Saxon stronghold and Norman fortress to a royal palace, the castle and the town are rich in history. -
Corfe Castle - A thousand-year-old royal castle shaped by warfare. One of Britain’s most iconic and evocative survivors of the English Civil War, partially demolished in 1646 by the Parliamentarians. A favorite spot for both adults and children, these romantic castle ruins offer breathtaking views across Purbeck. Discover 1,000 years of history as a royal palace and fortress. With fallen walls and hidden corners, tales of treachery and treason await around every corner. Spot the ‘murder holes’ and count the arrow loops. Feel history come to life and observe the wildlife that has made its home here.

A short walk along the sweeping expanse of the cove, perfect for picnicking and relaxation, leads to Durdle Door, a limestone arch rising 200 feet out of the aquamarine water.
- Chesil Bank (Chesil Beach) - From here, we look west over the 18 miles of Chesil Beach and the southernmost tip of the Jurassic Coast. With its three castles and three lighthouses, this small island is packed with attractions!
- Isle of Portland - Continuing westwards, we reach Weymouth, a famous seaside town at the mouth of the River Wey. Much of its architecture dates back to the Georgian and Regency periods (1770-1855). The Isle of Portland is an explorer’s paradise, filled with historical and folkloric curiosities waiting to be discovered.
- Abbotsbury Abbey Remains - Continuing our journey along Chesil Beach, we pass the village of Abbotsbury, once home to a richly endowed abbey founded in 1044. Situated in a wooded, sheltered valley near Chesil Beach, Abbotsbury Gardens benefit from a microclimate that allows rare plant species unusual to England to thrive.
- West Bay - As our journey concludes, we visit the famous town where Broadchurch was filmed! On our way to West Bay, we pass through the market town of Bridport. The golden strata of nearby East Cliff are one of the most distinctive features of the Jurassic Coast, and the area is very popular with walkers. East Beach has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest and forms the end of Chesil Beach, which extends 18 miles southwest from the Isle of Portland. The cliffs here are very unstable, so it’s important to keep well clear of the cliff edges and bases.
