Great day at Kensington Palace - Massive thanks to James for the hilarious talk, what a fabulous tour guide! Also Claire, who we chatted to for ages regarding siblings of Queen Victoria, and her amazing research on both of them. Definitely an exhibition waiting to happen there. Both really made our tour of Kensington Palace today. Only criticism was we decided to have lunch half way through, to find we had to queue again to get back in and have our tickets re-scanned.

Great Spur Of The Moment Decision - We thought of Kensington Palace after our initial plans for the day fell apart. It was a case of scoring on a busted play. We had an audio tour of the king and queen’s state rooms and a display of the childhood of Queen Victoria. We were awed by the décor and intrigued by the story of 300 years of royal habitation. After the tour we enjoyed a walk through the gardens and around the pond with its abundant flocks of swans, geese and ducks. We did not have time for a stroll through the wildflowers but the paths were tempting. Our spur of the moment decision tour Knasington Palace was one of the best of our British tour.

Very good surprise - Very nice surprise for this castle in London.. The audio guide, included in the ticket is a real plus (available in French). It brings a host of details and bonuses about each of the different sovereigns whose apartments are visited in the wings. Favorite for the wing dedicated to Queen Victoria. The gardens around are cute without being breathtaking.

Fascinating British royal history - Fascinating look at British royal history. We originally wanted to try to get Buckingham Palace tour tickets, but they were slow to announce them. Incredible artwork.

Disappointing - Disappointing, especially given the rather high entrance fee. The rooms are rather unimpressive in terms of decor (feels very little like a royal palace), and the exhibits are chintzy. For example, one room has a dollhouse with very repetitive audio playing nearby of a young child giggling and a dog barking (presumably meant to be the young Princess Victoria and her dog), and that exhibit is one of the better ones. There are far more impressive and interesting places (with free admission) to go in London. I’d love to see them do better.

Underwhelmed - Was expecting more from the ‘Victorian Christmas ‘ experience.. very little to denote it is Christmas time.. and overall, just not one of the best palaces to visit.. tho, might give it another go in the summer and see if the gardens add something to it… wasn’t helped by being rushed out by staff at the end to the point that 10 minutes before closing they had a man in the ladies trying to check the cubicles were empty..

Disappointing. - This was a disappointing visit. We visited each part of the palace open to visitors. The rooms are dark and poorly furnished with few historical items to capture your attention. The audio handset did not enhance the visit either. £20 per person and we didn’t think it was value for money. We saw the Diana monument. Underwhelming. The gift shop was very good. Would we recommend? No.

Lack Lustre Victorian Christmas - Aside from Victoria's Childhood exhbition which had a couple of averagely decorated trees, there was nothing Victoriana, grande or royal about the palace considering it is Christmas. All very lack lustre. Perhaps our expectations were set too high considering that we upgraded our tickets after fantastic visits to Hampton Court and The Tower of London in October ans November. Very glad we didn't pay to visit. Could be so much more especially for children ( a child friendly audio guide would be fab). The rest of the house could be decorated too as there is nothing different compared to any other day, especially as it is Christmas. Took over 3 hours to get here due to heavy traffic in Southampton and completed place in just over an hour. Wish we just went to a National Trust who go all out for Victorian Christmases.
