The name Derry is derived from the Old Irish name Daire (modern Irish: Doire), meaning “oak grove.” In 1613, the city received a Royal Charter from King James I, adding the “London” prefix to acknowledge the funding from London guilds. The historic walled city is situated on the west bank of the River Foyle, connected by two road bridges and one footbridge. The city now spans both banks, with Cityside on the west and Waterside on the east. According to the 2001 Census, the city’s population was 83,652, while the Derry Urban Area had 90,736 residents. The district governed by Derry City and Strabane District Council includes both Londonderry Port and City of Derry Airport.

Derry is near the border with County Donegal, with which it has maintained close ties for centuries. Saint Colmcille, a holy man from Tír Chonaill (the old name for most of modern County Donegal), is traditionally regarded as the founder of the original Derry, which included the west bank of the Foyle before 1610.

In 2013, Derry was named the inaugural UK City of Culture, a title it received in 2010.

• Peace Bridge - The Peace Bridge is a pedestrian and cycle bridge over the River Foyle in Derry, Northern Ireland. Opened on June 25, 2011, it connects Ebrington Square with the city center. It is the newest of the city’s three bridges, alongside the Craigavon Bridge and the Foyle Bridge. The 235-meter (771 ft) bridge was designed by AECOM, also responsible for the Sutong Yangtze River Bridge, and Wilkinson Eyre Architects, who designed the Gateshead Millennium Bridge.

The bridge offers views of both sides of the river and passing trains. It was inaugurated by EU Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn, First Minister Peter Robinson, deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness, and Irish Taoiseach Enda Kenny. The bridge aims to enhance relations between the predominantly unionist ‘Waterside’ and the largely nationalist ‘Cityside’ by improving access as part of broader regeneration efforts. It also provides a crossing over the railway line near Waterside station.

Funding for the bridge came from the Department for Social Development (NI), the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government, and matching funds totaling £14 million from the SEUPB Peace III program.
