The original Chinese Theatre was commissioned after the success of the nearby Grauman’s Egyptian Theatre, which opened in 1922. Both theaters are designed in the Exotic Revival architectural style. Built by a partnership led by Sid Grauman over 18 months starting in January 1926, the theater opened on May 18, 1927, with the premiere of Cecil B. DeMille’s The King of Kings. It has since hosted numerous premieres, including the 1977 debut of George Lucas’ Star Wars, as well as birthday parties, corporate events, and three Academy Awards ceremonies. One of the theater’s most distinctive features is the forecourt, which contains concrete blocks bearing the signatures, footprints, and handprints of famous motion picture personalities from the 1920s to the present.
