Norris Geyser Basin - Named after an early Yellowstone Superintendent, Norris Geyser Basin may be the hottest geyser basin in Yellowstone. The stark, barren landscape of Porcelain Basin results from an acidic environment. Due to the harsh conditions, plants, algae, and bacteria struggle to establish themselves. Instead, the basin’s colors come from mineral oxides, in shades of pink, red, orange (iron oxides), and yellow (sulfur and iron sulfates). The world’s largest geyser, Steamboat Geyser, is located here. Though it has long periods of dormancy, when it erupts, it sends jets of water nearly 380 feet high in a spectacular display.
Upper Falls - Located a quarter-mile upstream of the larger Lower Falls, the Upper Yellowstone River Falls drop 109 feet down an eroded lava cliff into the basin below. The area below the falls has experienced more erosion than above.
Artist Point - Artist Point is one of the most breathtaking scenic areas in the Canyon Area of the park. The sheer walls drop 700 feet to the canyon floor. Upriver, the powerful Lower Falls are still visible. Downriver, the canyon widens and deepens to a maximum of 1,540 feet. The canyon walls are predominantly yellow, but shades of blue, red, orange, and brown are also present. The colors change and intensify, especially when the sun shines after a rain.
Yellowstone Geysers - Mud Volcano Area - The Mud Volcano erupted in the early 20th century, but visitors can still see the impressive crater and other geothermal features in the area, such as the Mud Cauldron, Black Dragon’s Caldron, and Dragon’s Mouth Spring.

Fountain Paint Pot - The Fountain Paint Pot is named for the reds, yellows, and browns of the mud in this area. The varying colors come from the oxidation states of the iron in the mud. As with all hot springs, the heat in the caldera forces pressurized water up through the ground, which is expelled here. Rising gases cause the bubbling action. The bubbling varies with the seasons.
Old Faithful Geyser - Old Faithful is a cone geyser in the Upper Geyser Basin of Yellowstone National Park. It is one of the park’s most famous natural features, known for its predictability. It generally erupts every 91 minutes.
Great Salt Lake - Great Salt Lake, located in northern Utah, is the largest inland body of salt water in the Western Hemisphere and one of the most saline inland bodies of water in the world. The lake is fed by the Bear, Weber, and Jordan rivers and has no outlet. The lake’s size fluctuates greatly, depending on evaporation rates and the flow of the rivers that feed it. Like the Dead Sea, the Great Salt Lake exists in an arid environment and has chemical characteristics similar to the oceans, but with much higher salinity due to natural evaporation exceeding the water supply from the rivers.
