Highlights
  • Kentucky Derby Museum - Located in Louisville, the Kentucky Derby is one of America’s most exciting horse racing events in the world and takes place at Churchill Downs Racetrack. It is the first leg of the American Triple Crown and is known as ”The Most Exciting Two Minutes In Sports” because of the actual duration of the race.  Some like to call the race “The Run for the Roses” for the blanket of roses draped over the Derby winner.

When you visit, you will enjoy a self-guided tour of the Kentucky Derby Museum, which includes two levels of family-friendly interactive permanent & temporary exhibits.  Ten minutes past each hour, you will have the opportunity to see “The Greatest Race,” an 18-minute movie about the Kentucky Derby and its history, a story that puts you right in the heart of the first Saturday of May.  Immediately following “The Greatest Race” and at 30-minutes past every hour, you will experience an exhilarating 30-minute guided walking tour of historic Churchill Downs Racetrack and witness where some of the most famous teams of jockeys and Thoroughbreds competed such as Secretariat, Barbaro, Big Brown, California Chrome and the most recent Triple Crown winner in 2015- American Pharoah.

Tips for the visit! Churchill Downs - This museum is part of the race track. They offer many different tours and I recommend reserving in advance. If you are trying to fit in the 20 minute movie and the tour, not they pick you up from the theater. So, the movie and tours should be back to back. Parking is plentiful but this places is HUGE this plan for walking distance between parking and entrance. Get the camera ready and enjoy!

Experience the Kentucky Derby without the crowds! - We arrived late to the museum and only had an hour to see everything before the last race of the day was going to take place. We were torn on what we should do but the moment we walked into the museum Diane gave us the best strategy to see the museum in the allotted time. I highly recommend seeing the "The Greatest Race" movie when you go. What really made this an amazing experience was at the end when Diane took us out to the track in order for us to see the last race of the day. This was such a special experience! Even though it was close to the time of the museum closing...she never rushed us but was patient with all our questions.

Off to the races! - We had such a great time. Loved the movie and the short walking tour to the track. So much to see, learn and accessible at all levels for everyone to have a great time. The cemetery was a unique experience and the kids loved learning what parts of the horse are buried. Many photo opportunities and the kids loved the interactive horse racing area. The staff at the cafe were the best and we left with souvenir glasses. Go! You will be happy you did!

Excellent Experience - We love the experience. I was not a big fan of the Derby (before the visit) as my husband is. However, the experience takes you to another level. The guide was super nice, very informative and enthusiastic. Definitely, we are going to come back.
