Highlights
  • Cave Museum, Village Troglodytique de Rochemenier - Explore the village of Rochmenier which consists of 250 underground rooms, excavated out of the rock and distributed over around 40 farms.

Rooms were added to meet the needs of a growing population. The oldest habitation apparently dates from the 13th century. The village gradually expanded right up to the 19th century. The dwellings are excavated from sandstone which contained sea shells. This rock is a kind of calcareous sand and was used by farmers to neutralise soil acidity. During your visit you will see part of the village consisting of two farms which were abandoned towards the beginning of the 20th century and opened to the public in 1967. The exhibits, furniture, tools and photographs describe the lifestyle of the last inhabitants.

A surprising place - This was not what I was expecting but was very interested in what I found. It was much more "civilised" than I expected as people led normal lives there right up until the mid 20th Century. It was very pleasant to walk around and see the farm machinery and learn about their lives in the cool of the caves. It was good value at 8 EURO.

Troglodyte village is super place to visit - An extraordinary place with a fascinating history presented with great sensitivity and a sense of fun. It is a special history site and a great family location to visit. Helpful friendly staff and lots of information available on other attractions in the area. The little 14th century church across the road worth visit too. Also try a Troglodyte beer! It is very good. Highly recommend this experience. It has lots of authenticity.

Definitely recommend, especially when travelling with kids - The cave museum was very interesting for both adults and children and our kids (5&8yrs) loved it. We had never seen troglodyte caves before so it was a new experience.

Interesting afternoon - Although we enjoyed our afternoon here, I found it a little too staged with items strategically placed! One impressive piece was the shadow puppet imagery in one of the caves. It was nice that we were given a leaflet which explained each cave and were allowed to wander around at our own pace.

A good place to visit both educationally and enjoyable. - Went here on a very hot day hoping or some respite, which we got as the caves were at a steady cool temperature. This is approached from the car park up the road about 100yards. The actual village is down steps or a slope for wheelchairs to the pay booth. Here yo are either given a paper description or those with a mobile phone can use their Wi-Fi and. qR code to download the guide to your phone. The village consists of some 20+ caves around 2 troglodyte farms. They are easy to follow and the guide on your phone is duplicated on the walls as you go. It is well lit, easy to follow and. Contains lots of interesting facts. It was interesting, educational and enjoyable.

Well kept with good explanations in English - Our visit lasted 1 1/2 hrs. We bought the 3 euro booklet. It is 2 farms joined together. Signing is a little innacurate at times and not always matched up wiht the numbers in the booklet. Well looked after. Looking round as a group coud be quite challenging as inside spaces are qute small.

Fascinating - This is a lot more than we expected, we wandered around here for a couple of hours in the cool of the caves discovering this very unusual way of life. The inhabitants were obviously very resourceful and able to adapt their dwellings as they needed. It particularly came to life with the various photos in some of the rooms, and especially so with the La veillee des ombres audio visual. A surprisingly fascinating piece of history.

Interesting - We found ourselves with a few hours to kill on a Sunday before making our way up to Caen for the ferry home and decided on Rochemenier simply because we'd picked up a leaflet at our hotel and it wasn't too far off our route to the port. I'm glad we did. Interesting, informative and, on a hot summer's day, cool this is not your usual troglodyte dwelling in the mouth of a cave but part of a more extensive underground village dug out a few metres below the fields.
