A Rainy Welcome to the Daintree

Arriving in Lower Daintree, I was greeted by the unexpected patter of rain, a reminder of nature’s unpredictability. July is typically a dry month in northern Queensland, but the skies had other plans. As an advocate for sustainable tourism, I was eager to experience the Daintree River Cruise and witness the delicate balance of the ecosystem, rain or shine. The cruise began with a warm welcome from the crew, who offered us tea, coffee, and a delightful assortment of biscuits. Their hospitality was matched by the presence of a charming French bulldog, who seemed particularly interested in the biscuits. As we set off, the guide’s enthusiasm was infectious, and I was reminded of the importance of supporting local operators who are passionate about their environment.

Crocodiles and Kingfishers

The Daintree River is renowned for its estuarine crocodiles, and despite the rain, I was hopeful to catch a glimpse of these ancient creatures. The guide explained that the crocodiles usually bask on the riverbanks, but the cooler weather had driven them underwater. Yet, nature did not disappoint. We spotted four or five crocodiles, including one of the oldest and largest males, gracefully swimming across the river. Birdwatching enthusiasts would have been thrilled with the sightings that day. A vibrant kingfisher caught my eye, its colors a striking contrast against the muted backdrop of the rainy forest.
