Highlights
  • Majdanek State Museum - The German concentration camp located in Lublin, commonly referred to as Majdanek, was established by order of Heinrich Himmler. Constructed in the fall of 1941, it was originally named Kriegsgefangenenlager der Waffen SS Lublin, which translates to a prisoner-of-war camp, and in February 1943, it was officially designated as Konzentrationslager Lublin, meaning a concentration camp. Starting in October 1942, a separate section for female prisoners was set up. While plans to create a dedicated children’s camp at Majdanek did not come to fruition, children from Jewish, Belarusian, and Polish backgrounds, particularly from the Zamosc area, were detained alongside adults. Inmates were brought in from over 30 different nations, with the majority being nationals of Poland (including Poles and Jews), the Soviet Union, and Czechoslovakia (Jews).
