Excursion specifics:

The exploration of Lucera, led by a licensed guide, commences at the Roman amphitheater, a structure from the times of Augustus and one of the earliest and largest venues in southern Italy, accommodating between 16,000 and 18,000 spectators. It was erected to celebrate Augustus and the colony of Lucera, as verified by the inscription on the architraves of the entrance gateways.

Following the tour of the amphitheater, the excursion proceeds towards the other end of Lucera, to the Swabian-Angevin fortress, an iconic landmark of Lucera. Constructed on the Albano hill in the 13th century, this site was a significant Muslim settlement (being inhabited since the 3rd millennium AD) and was home to up to 60,000 Muslims from Sicily who were steadfastly loyal to the Swabian dynasty.

The journey continues into the heart of the city with a visit to the Cathedral Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta. Founded by Charles II from the Angevin dynasty in 1302, it is believed to be built over the ruins of the Saracen mosque.
