Also known as the “Monastery of Great Relic,” it was the center of Buddhism in the Ayutthaya Kingdom until it was set ablaze by the Burmese. A Buddha’s head entwined within the roots of a tree is one of the most iconic images in the temple. Wat Na Phra Men, or “The Monastery in Front of the Funeral Pyre,” features the crowned Buddha, the most significant Buddha image. The crowned image sits in the Subduing Mara posture, measuring 6 m high and 4.50 m wide across the lap. The image was cast in metal and covered with gold leaf. The unique features of Phra Buddha include the image being dressed in royal attire complete with a crown, earrings, necklace, chest, and arm ornaments. -
