- Damnoen Saduak Floating Market - Damnoensaduak is considered one of the most famous and attractive travel destinations. Historically, Damnoensaduak was the name of a canal dug during the reign of King Rama IV by military personnel and residents of Rajburi, Samutsakorn, and Samutsongkram Provinces, under the direction of Phayasrisuriyawong, the Minister of Defence. In those days, without rivers and canals, transportation was nearly impossible. Concerned about the country’s future economic growth, King Rama IV ordered the canal to be dug to connect the Taachin River in Samutsakorn Province with the Maklong River in Samutsongkram Province.
Today, Damnoensaduak is a district in Rajburi Province. Most residents live densely along both sides of the canal from one end to the other. The majority are farmers who grow various fruits and vegetables, such as oranges, grapes, papayas, cabbages, beans, and onions. The land in this area is naturally fertile. Besides providing transportation, the Damnoensaduak Canal supplies farmers with adequate water for agriculture year-round. More than 200 small canals were dug by local peasants to connect with it, ensuring water reaches their land. These small canals also serve as convenient routes for transporting agricultural products to markets in neighboring provinces and Bangkok. From about 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., the Floating Market is bustling with hundreds of vendors and buyers in small rowing boats, selling, buying, or exchanging goods. Most of what they sell includes food, fruit, and vegetables from their own orchards.
