The best of Luxor West Bank

Valley of the Kings - In the morning, you’ll be picked up from your central Luxor hotel or harbor by an air-conditioned vehicle for a fully guided 8-hour tour. Your first stop will be the Necropolis of Thebes, the Valley of the Kings on Luxor’s West Bank. This ancient burial ground is a must-see for visitors. Here, you’ll explore four royal tombs, including those of Ramses, Horemheb, and Merenptah.

Tomb of Ramses III - Known as KV 11, the tomb of Ramesses III is a complex system in the Valley of the Kings. Famous since ancient times, its stunning decorations include colorful painted sunken reliefs featuring traditional ritual texts like the Litany of Ra and the Book of Gates, as well as depictions of Ramses before the gods. Unique to this tomb are secular scenes in the small side rooms of the entrance corridor, showcasing foreign tributes, detailed pottery from the Aegean, the royal armory, boats, and blind harpists, which earned it the nickname ‘Tomb of the Harpers.’

Tomb of Ramses IX - Ramses IX, the third pharaoh of the Twentieth Dynasty of the New Kingdom, was originally named Amonhirkhopshef. He was the fifth son of Ramses III and became crown prince after his four elder brothers predeceased him. The tomb is richly decorated, with vibrant colors and intricate details, including a ceiling adorned with the goddess Nut. Despite some deterioration, it remains one of the most elaborately decorated tombs in the valley.

Tomb of Merenptah - In Egyptian mythology, Ptah is the demiurge of Memphis, the god of craftsmen and architects. Tomb 8 in the Valley of the Kings is the burial place of Pharaoh Merneptah, son of Ramses II and Queen Isis-Nofret. Discovered by Howard Carter in 1903, the tomb features fewer lateral rooms but significantly taller corridors and chambers. Merneptah’s tomb was built on a single axis, with a notably wider entrance compared to earlier tombs.

Tomb of King Tutankhamun (Tut) - Entrance fees to the tomb of Tutankhamun are 360.00 EGP (optional). King Tutankhamun, the most famous pharaoh, ascended the throne at around 10 years old and died at 19. You’ll have the chance to see his royal mummy in his tomb in the Valley of the Kings.

Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el Bahari - After visiting the tombs, you’ll be transported to the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut at Deir el Bahari. She was the only woman to reign over Egypt as Pharaoh and an ancestor of King Tutankhamun.

Colossi of Memnon - The Colossi of Memnon are the two largest ancient statues in Egypt, dating back to the era of King Amenhotep III.

Mortuary Temple of Ramses III - The Mortuary Temple of Ramses III in Luxor, Egypt.

The Best of Luxor East Bank: Karnak Temples, Luxor Museum, Luxor Temple

Temple of Karnak - At Karnak, you’ll visit one of the world’s greatest architectural masterpieces. The complex of Karnak Temples on Luxor’s East Bank includes the Avenue of Sphinxes, the Hypostyle Hall with its 134 gigantic columns, the Obelisks of Queen Hatshepsut and Thutmose I, the Temple of Amon adorned with lotus and papyrus designs, the Granite Scarab of Amenhotep III, and the Sacred Lake. Karnak is one of the most beautiful ancient monuments in Egypt.

Luxor Temple - Dedicated to the Theban Triad of Amun-Ra, Mut, and Khonsu, Luxor Temple features granite statues of Ramses the Great. These ancient temples are a must-see for visitors.

Obelisk of Thutmose I - The Obelisks of Queen Hatshepsut and Thutmose I, and the Temple of Amon adorned with lotus and papyrus designs.

Obelisk of Queen Hatshepsut - The Obelisks of Queen Hatshepsut and Thutmose I, and the Temple of Amon adorned with lotus and papyrus designs.

Avenue of Sphinxes - This spectacular avenue once stretched from Luxor to Karnak, a distance of 3 km. Today, only a few hundred meters remain, but it is still impressive. The avenue used to connect the Karnak and Luxor temples, lined with sphinxes on both sides.

Luxor Museum - Enjoy a guided visit to Luxor Museum, where you’ll spend an hour exploring its unique collection of ancient items found in Luxor, including objects from Tutankhamun’s tomb. Admire the double statue of Sobek, the crocodile god, and King Amenhotep III, along with several mummies. Learn about the colors and tools used to decorate ancient tombs and temples. Fantastic time in Luxor! - Hassan was a wonderful, generous guide, not only during the tour but throughout my stay in Luxor. I only had two days and wanted to make the most of my experience and helped me do just that. At each site he had fascinating stories and explanations and he always went above and beyond to ensure I had the best experience. He is genuinely passionate and curious about the history he tells - it makes the whole experience much more meaningful. I would often stay much longer than planned at various sites and he was always patient and understanding. When I wanted to buy a carpet he went with me and supported me through the whole bargaining process which took hours. He had the best recommendations for restaurants, things to do around Luxor, etc. If you go to the sites by yourself, you will see paintings and nice images, but having a guide like Hassan makes it all come to life. Do yourself a favor and call Hassan.

Fabulous few days with excellent guide - We really enjoyed our 3 day trip arranged by Luxor Travel. We visited the valley of the kings and other west bank sites on day 1, luxor and karnak temples on day 2 and edfu and kom ombo temples on day 3 dropping us off in Aswan. We had an excellent guide, Hassan who I would highly recommend. He explained the history behind everything we sawin an interesting and informative way and gave us excellent recommendations for which tombs to visit at the valley of the kings. He also walked with us down the avenue of the sphinx from luxor temple entering to karnak temple through the back entrance which was very special as we avoided the crowds. Hassan was interesting to soend time with and very flexible about timings. I will definitely recommend him to friends coming to Egypt

The tombs at the valley of the Kings are truly magnificent as too was the temple of Hatshepsut. Day two you will travel the east bank of the city and Karnak and the Luxor Temples await. There is also so much to see here as well. Make sure you have plenty of memory on you camera to keep taking the pictures.

Amazing trip seeing Luxor with Hassan - Hassan was everything you would want from a guide - knowledgeable, friendly, attentive to questions/needs of the group, and very funny. He provided incredible context for each of the sights we saw, made sure we understood the context and rich history, and willing to go above and beyond for anyone in the group’s needs. We will absolutely be using Hassan again on our next visit.
