The Great Temple of Amun-Re, dedicated to the god Amun-Re, is the most prominent temple on the site, constructed during the reigns of Pharaohs Amenhotep III and Ramses II. Other notable temples within the complex include the Temple of Ptah, dedicated to the god of craftsmen and architects, the Temple of Khonsu, dedicated to the moon god, and the Temple of Aten, dedicated to the sun disk god Aten in the distinctive Amarna style.
The complex is encircled by an impressive mud brick wall with eight gates, built by a king of the Thirtieth Dynasty. Visitors from across the globe come to admire the intricate architecture, rich history, and spiritual significance of the temple, which stands as a testament to the ancient Egyptians’ skill and ingenuity.
- Colossi of Memnon - The Colossi of Memnon, also known as the statues of Memnon, are two colossal stone statues located in the Theban Necropolis on Luxor’s west bank of the Nile. These statues, approximately 18 meters tall and weighing around 720 tons each, were erected in the 14th century BC by Pharaoh Amenhotep III to guard the entrance of his mortuary temple.
Named after Memnon, a hero of the Trojan War in Greek mythology, the statues were believed to produce a sound at dawn when the sun’s rays hit them, which the Greeks thought was Memnon greeting his mother Eos, the goddess of dawn. This phenomenon is due to the stone’s expansion as it warms from the sun, creating vibrations that produce the sound. The Greeks believed the sound indicated the statues were alive, making them a popular tourist attraction.
Over time, the Colossi of Memnon became a favored destination for tourists worldwide.
- Valley of the Kings - The Valley of the Kings is a famous archaeological site on Luxor’s west bank of the Nile River in Egypt. It is one of the most important and renowned historical monuments of ancient Egyptian civilization, drawing thousands of tourists annually. The valley comprises narrow corridors and passageways leading to rooms carved into the rock, each serving as the final resting place of a New Kingdom pharaoh.
The tombs in the Valley of the Kings were designed to be challenging to access, deterring grave robbers from stealing the valuable treasures and artifacts within.
Some of the most renowned tombs in the Valley of the Kings include Tutankhamun’s tomb, discovered in 1922 by British archaeologist Howard Carter, which contained an astonishing array of treasures, including the famous gold mask of Tutankhamun.
- Temple of Hatshepsut - Built by the Egyptian Eighteenth Dynasty, the Temple of Hatshepsut is an impressive architectural wonder located on the west bank of the Nile. This magnificent temple boasts a unique three-tiered design, adorned with colorful stone statues that highlight its beauty and elegance. Beyond its exceptional design, the Temple of Hatshepsut is also famous for its inscriptions, which depict the naval missions sent by Queen Hatshepsut to the land of Punt for trade and to bring back incense and myrrh. Incense was considered a vital offering to the gods by the Pharaohs of Egypt, as evidenced by the paintings on their temples, showing the Pharaohs offering incense to various gods.
