• Originally, the statues stood at the entrance to Amenhotep III’s mortuary temple, one of the largest temple complexes ever built in ancient Egypt.

• Each statue is approximately 60 feet (18 meters) tall and weighs around 720 tons. They are carved from quartzite sandstone blocks.

• The colossi are famous for the “Vocal Memnon” phenomenon, where one of the statues would “sing” at dawn due to the rising sun’s effect on the stone. This phenomenon amazed both ancient and modern visitors.

• In 27 BCE, a significant earthquake damaged the northern colossus, causing the upper half to collapse. The lower half remains in its original location.
