  • Valley of the Kings - The Valley of the Kings is a renowned archaeological site in Luxor, Egypt. It served as the main burial ground for pharaohs and other significant figures during the New Kingdom period of ancient Egypt (c. 1550-1069 BCE).

  • Located on the west bank of the Nile River, opposite the city of Luxor (ancient Thebes).

  • More than 60 tombs have been found in the valley, with the most famous being the tomb of Tutankhamun, discovered in 1922.

  • The tombs were built to safeguard the bodies and valuable belongings of the deceased pharaohs from grave robbers. They were adorned with intricate artwork, inscriptions, and contained funerary items.

  • Notable pharaohs buried in the valley include Tutankhamun, Ramesses the Great, Seti I, and Amenhotep III.

  • The tombs were carved into the valley’s limestone hillsides, each featuring a unique layout and design.

  • Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el Bahari - The Hatshepsut Temple, also known as Djeser-Djeseru, is a mortuary temple of the female pharaoh Hatshepsut located in the Deir el-Bahari area of Luxor, Egypt.

  • Construction of the temple began around 1479 BCE during Hatshepsut’s reign, one of the few female pharaohs in ancient Egyptian history.

  • The temple is noted for its distinctive terraced design, inspired by the nearby cliffs of Deir el-Bahari.

  • The architecture includes a series of colonnaded terraces and ramps leading up to the main temple structures.

  • The walls and columns are decorated with elaborate reliefs, paintings, and inscriptions showcasing Hatshepsut’s achievements and her divine right to rule as pharaoh.

  • The temple was dedicated to the god Amun and featured shrines, offering halls, and other ritual spaces.

  • Colossi of Memnon - The Colossi of Memnon are two enormous stone statues of the pharaoh Amenhotep III located in Luxor, Egypt.

  • The statues represent Amenhotep III, who ruled ancient Egypt during the 18th Dynasty (c. 1386-1349 BCE).

  • Originally, the statues stood at the entrance to Amenhotep III’s mortuary temple, one of the largest temple complexes ever built in ancient Egypt.

  • Each statue is approximately 60 feet (18 meters) tall and weighs around 720 tons. They are carved from quartzite sandstone blocks.

  • The colossi are famous for the “Vocal Memnon” phenomenon, where one of the statues would “sing” at dawn due to the rising sun’s effect on the stone. This phenomenon amazed both ancient and modern visitors.

  • In 27 BCE, a significant earthquake damaged the northern colossus, causing the upper half to collapse. The lower half remains in its original location.
