Highlights

FLY TO LUKLA, TREK TO PHAKDING (elev. 2,652 m/8,700 ft.)

Lukla - The morning starts early with breakfast at your hotel, followed by a trip to the domestic airport for a flight to Lukla (elev. 2,845 m/9,334 ft.). The 40-minute flight offers stunning views of the Himalayas. Upon landing in Lukla, gather your belongings and embark on a 3-4 hour trek to the Sherpa village of Phakding. This village is an excellent spot to spend the night and explore. Along the way, you’ll see the snow-covered peak of Mt. Kusum-Kangaru, visit a Buddhist monastery, and pass through dense jungles along the Dudh Koshi River. Overnight stay in Phakding.

Phakding - Overnight stay in Lodge Phakding.

TREK TO NAMCHE BAZAAR (elev. 3,439 m/11,283 ft.)

Namche Bazaar - After a primarily downhill trek to Phakding, today’s journey is an uphill trek to Namche Bazaar, the main village of the Khumbu region and the capital of the Sherpa people. The village is built like an amphitheater into the mountainside. Follow the river through dense jungle to enter Sagarmatha National Park at Monjo village. Today, you’ll catch your first glimpse of Mt. Everest and other impressive peaks. We will spend two nights in Namche Bazaar. Trekking time is 7-8 hours.

ACCLIMATIZATION DAY IN NAMCHE BAZAAR

Namche Bazaar - Given the high elevation of the Everest region, it’s standard to take a day in Namche Bazaar to acclimate to the thinner air. You may have felt short of breath upon arrival. The best way to prevent Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is to rest and adjust.

Namche Bazaar is a delightful place to spend a day. Visit the Sherpa Museum, enjoy baked goods at the local bakery, or have a beer with the Sherpa people. The town’s colorful stone houses are a visual treat. Experience the warm hospitality of the Sherpa community.

TREK TO TYANGBOCHE (elev. 3,867 m/12,683 ft.)

Tyangboche - Depart from the picturesque Namche Bazaar and continue ascending. Mt. Everest remains a constant landmark as you climb. Cross small streams and admire the clear blue skies. The destination is Tyangboche, home to the world’s highest Buddhist monastery. Overnight stay in Tyangboche. Trekking time is 5-6 hours.

TREK TO DINGBOCHE (elev. 4,357 m/14,295 ft.)

Dingboche - The trek becomes more challenging as you ascend above 4,000 meters. Vegetation becomes sparse as you cross the tree line. You’ll be amazed by the farms the Sherpa people have cultivated over centuries. Despite the harsh conditions, they grow food and raise yaks for milk, fur, and meat. The trek to Dingboche takes about five hours. If you didn’t have time to explore the Buddhist monastery in Tyangboche yesterday, start your day with a visit. The monastery, with Mt. Everest as its backdrop, is a perfect place for meditation.

SECOND ACCLIMATIZATION DAY AT DINGBOCHE

Dingboche - Having crossed the 4,000-meter mark, another rest day is necessary to prevent AMS. While eager to reach Everest Base Camp, this stop is crucial. Enjoy day hikes to see Mani Walls created by Buddhists over centuries. Optionally, hike to Nagarjuna View Point (elev. 4,999 m/16,400 ft.) for views of Eastern Nepal’s snowcapped peaks and the green Imja Valley below. Return to your guest house in Dingboche for a restful night in the pristine alpine air.

TREK TO LOBUCHE (elev. 4,927 m/16,164 ft.)

Lobuche - The adventure continues eastward. The land supports few farms, but you’ll pass chhortens and mani walls, monuments created by Sherpa Buddhists to honor events and ancestors. Mt. Pumori and other Everest region peaks are today’s highlights. The trek to Lobuche takes 4-5 hours. Though a small village, the guest house offers good food and friendly people. Overnight stay in Lobuche.

TREK TO GORAKSHEP (elev. 5,160 m/16,929 ft.), HIKE TO MT. KALAPATTHAR (elev. 5,550 m/18,204 ft.)

Gorakshep - Nearing Mt. Everest, leave civilization behind at Lobuche and head to Gorakshep, the last stop before Everest Base Camp. The rocky trail and crisp air lead to Gorakshep by noon. Deposit your backpacks and take a short hike to the top of Mt. Kalapatthar, a trekking peak that requires no specialized equipment. Enjoy a spectacular view of Mt. Everest. After a two-hour climb, return to the guest house in Gorakshep for the night.

TO EVEREST BASE CAMP (elev. 5,316 m/17,437 ft.)

Mount Everest - Enjoy a leisurely day trekking to Everest Base Camp. Take photos and meet climbers starting their ascent or returning victorious. Savor the moment in the thin air. Return to Gorakshep for a relaxing evening and a delicious dinner on your last night.

TREK TO PHERICHE (elev. 4,199 m/13,776 ft.)

Pheriche - Dughlha Road - Begin the journey back with a trek to Pheriche, home to the Himalayan Rescue Association. Admire the terraced farmland and snowcapped peaks. Overnight stay in a local guest house in Pheriche.

TREK TO PHORTSE VILLAGE (elev. 3,840 m/12,598 ft.)

TREK TO NAMCHE BAZAAR (elev. 3,439 m/11,283 ft.)

Namche Bazaar - Return to the main village of the Khumbu region, enjoying the sight of its colorful stone houses. Along the way, see more farms and children playing. Breathe in the rich mountain air. In the evening, shop for souvenirs and enjoy a great dinner. Trekking time is 5-6 hours.

TREK TO LUKLA (elev. 2,845 m/9,334 ft.)

Lukla - Trek back through dense jungle and along the Dudh Koshi River to reach Lukla airport. Spend your final night here. Trekking time is 7-8 hours.
