Bom Retiro translates to ‘fine retreat,’ which was an ideal description of the place over two centuries ago! However, the rise of the coffee industry and the establishment of the São Paulo Railway Company in 1847 dramatically transformed the locale.
Initially, the region attracted migrants from southern Europe, but this demographic was later supplanted by immigrants from eastern Europe, largely as a result of the two World Wars.
Subsequently, a diverse influx of newcomers, including Bolivians, Koreans, and people from the Brazilian North East, reshaped the demographic makeup of Bom Retiro.
