Highlights
  • Lyttelton - Lyttelton is one of New Zealand’s oldest townships and the launch point for Shackleton’s renowned Antarctic expeditions. It features the largest and busiest port on the South Island, while the town itself retains a charming local atmosphere. Every Saturday, the main street comes alive with a bustling local market.

Depending on your boat’s schedule, you might have some extra time at the beginning or end of the day to pick up a souvenir, visit a local café, or find a peaceful spot to take in the Harbour views.

  • Governors Bay - Governors Bay is a small community located at the far end of Lyttelton Harbour. It has around 5,000 residents, a small local school, and a single pub. It’s a lovely example of coastal living in New Zealand.

We will stop for a brief walk and photo opportunity at the iconic Governors Bay Jetty.

A 15-minute drive along the coast takes us to our next destination.

  • Gebbies Pass - Gebbies Pass connects Lyttelton Harbour to Banks Peninsula and Akaroa Harbour. Stopping at the top of the 161-meter-high pass offers a breathtaking view over the rugged farmland with Lyttelton Harbour in the background.

A 15-minute drive brings us to our next stop.

  • Kaituna Valley Scenic Reserve - Morning tea is served before we explore the beautiful native bush and admire the massive Matai (New Zealand White Pine) Trees. An easy 10-minute loop track is available for those who wish to stretch their legs.

A 15-minute drive brings us to our next destination.

  • Little River - A tiny township nestled between steep hillside farmland and native bush. The food, art, and ice cream sold here are favorites among Christchurch locals visiting Akaroa.

A 20-minute drive over a steep hill brings us into Akaroa Harbour and into Barrys Bay.

You will have some free time here to admire the local artworks, sample the ice cream, or check out the historic railway station.

  • Barrys Bay Cheese - An optional stop at this iconic local cheesemonger (open weekdays only).

From Barrys Bay, it takes 15 minutes to drive around the end of the harbour to the township of Akaroa.

  • Akaroa - It’s time to explore Akaroa township at your own pace. There is plenty to see and do, from small shops and incredible scenic walks to numerous lunch options (lunch is not included).
  • Otepatotu Scenic Reserve - Admire the view and snap a few photos from high above Akaroa Harbour on the Summit Road.
  • Christchurch - On the way back to Lyttelton, we will drive through the suburbs of Christchurch. If time permits, we will also drive through the center of Christchurch city. Depending on your cruise ship’s departure time, you may have some time in Christchurch City before heading back to the port.

Great for scenery. - This is a great trip for seeing the countryside and scenery. Our guide was born and raised in Christchurch and used to visit the area with her father, so she knows it well. We stopped at a cheese shop where we watched curds being separated - that was interesting. Akaroa is a small village with a few shops and eateries. Quaint if that's what your interest is. Altogether a nice day and tour.
