Great to get out of Marrakech and... -
Great to get out of Marrakech and explore this world heritage listed old fortified town and medina. First stop was at one of the women's Argan nut co-operatives. On the road to Essaouira you might also see goats up a couple of Argan trees. Our bus driver/guide almost didn't stop, and had to back up after cries from dome of the passengers. If you stop and take photos, you will be expected to contribute a small donation to the goat herders.

None of the other passengers in my tour bus wanted to engage the guide that met the bus at Essaouira, so I negotiated a 150Dir fee for a personal walking tour. It was well worth the expense with hearing about the towns history, culture, architecture and traditions with my own personal guide for a couple of hours. I was taken to visit some artisanal co-operatives and then to a restaurant. Food was nice, but it would have been cheaper buying something from the food stalls in the souk. Be aware guides probably enjoy a kickback from any purchase you make while with them.

Essaouira medina has a great souk to explore. Relaxed and friendly traders a marked difference to the atmosphere of Marrakech. I could have spent longer here in Essaouira exploring the medina. After the guide departed, I just wandered on my own, did a few purchase negotiations, including some clothing, jewellery. Enjoyed the whole Berber ceremony with one trader of sitting down with mint tea while talking and sharing and transacting the business. It was very civilized.

You can still get lost exploring the medina, but it doesn't take long to find your way again. It was an enjoyable day.
