The Machame trail, often referred to as the “Whiskey” trail, is the most favored route on Kilimanjaro. The allure of Machame lies in its spectacular scenery. However, it’s seen as a tough, steep and demanding trail, especially due to its relatively short schedule. Hence, this path is more suited for adventurous individuals or those with experience in high altitude, hiking, or backpacking.
The trail reaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the south, starting with a brief drive from Moshi to Machame Gate. The route takes climbers through the rainforest to Shira Plateau, where multiple routes of Kilimanjaro meet. The trail then heads east and moves below the Kilimanjaro’s Southern Ice Field, on a route known as the Southern Circuit, before summiting from Barafu. The descent is carried out via the Mweka trail.
We propose Machame as a seven-day group climb or as a six-day private climb. The six-day version merges days four and five, transitioning from Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp, skipping a stop at Karanga.
