Highlights
  • 3-chōme-14-14 Haramachida - The experience I offer is neither entertainment for foreigners nor a tourist trap. My class is training.
In this class, you will learn and experience the three disciplines: Iai, kendo (Gekken), and Test cutting.

In the Iai lesson, you will learn how to handle a Katana.
In the Gekken lesson, you will learn how to maintain the appropriate amount of space between you and an opponent. And learn when to attack and when to defend.
In the Test-cutting lesson, you will actually apply what you have learned and use an authentic Katana to cut two polles.

First, when you arrive at the dojo, you will attend a short lecture and change into your training clothes.

Next, after learning basic sword handling techniques, you will spar with a safe sparring sword.

Each person will get two poles for cutting. On the first pole, you may cut as you feel. We will then provide you with advice. Use this advice to challenge to the second pole. If you can properly apply what you have learned you will be able to cut the pole with a clean cut.

We will send you an email after your reservation is confirmed, so please be sure to check it.
Please note that the email may be sorted into your spam folder.

Additional Information

The experiences I provide are not a form of entertainment or performance.
Some experiences do not offer a true Samurai experience because foreign visitors are not familiar with Japanese culture. I believe this should not be the case and teach authentic Japanese swordsmanship and spirit.

For those who wish to have a proper experience, or want to study authentic kenjutsu, please come join one of my lessons.

The Toyama school of swordsmanship was originally taught by the old Japanese army and was the last Kenjutsu to be used in actual combat.
So,Toyama school was developed by combining the specialties of various sword schools.

Worth It! - Our visit to this samurai sword class was one of the highlights of our Tokyo trip. This is a genuine class at a school with worldwide affiliation, far from a watered-down tourist experience. The experience began with an insightful history lesson, setting a solid foundation before moving on to proper technique. The sparring session was a blast, so much so that the class extended it for a second round. The grand finale involved cutting tatami mats, where we could test the techniques we'd learned and experience the sharpness of an authentic Japanese katana. Sumida-san’s (the sensei) English was excellent, and his hospitality was exceptional, making the experience even more enjoyable. Despite the hour-long journey from central Tokyo, it was absolutely worth the time. My son can't stop talking about it and is now eager to find similar classes back home.

Worth the trip! - One of the highlights of our trip! Sumida was an excellent teacher and we really enjoyed learning about and practicing with the samurai swords. Sparring was also very fun! It’s a little bit out of the city but well worth the trip.

Great Sensei and experience, worth it! - So, this was the number 1 activity my husband wanted to do, and he LOVED it. I didn't participate in the class, but the sensei let me attend and observe. My husband considered this one of his top 3 experiences in Japan. He really enjoyed learning how to use a samurai sword and practice slicing through rolled up mats. Highly recommended!!!

Amazing experience, true master and sensei - Wish I could give it more stars. This was by far the best experience of our trip. He was very knowledgeable, accommodating, careful, and fun. Everyone in our small group had a blast and learned a lot. Loved the respect and care with which he treated the class and how he yearns to pass on the martial arts culture as a way of life. We are truly grateful for his time and dedication to sharing this amazing art and culture. Would definitely recommend and will book again when I return to Japan.

The most authentic experience you can have. - An amazing experience, something you will remember for a very long time. He was funny, patient and charasmatic. Also strict as you have to be around a Katana that can slice you. Absolutely any adult can try this no age limitations on mental ones Cannot give enough stars!
