Starting at the King Felipe IV monument in the heart of Plaza de Oriente, we’ll take a journey through the winding streets, meeting spots, pathways, and notable edifices of historical Madrid. We’ll uncover hidden gems and alluring nooks in the old city.
We’ll also tread paths unknown to most locals. The city’s roots date back to the Middle Ages, when it functioned as a small military town. Remnants of this era still exist, like the medieval Muslim wall set in the gardens of Emir Mohamed I, streets shaped by their Arab and Jewish roots, and Plaza del Alamillo, a spot where royalty used to spectate medieval competitions.
Our route will pass through the Jewish neighborhood and ancient mosque towers that have been repurposed into churches, like Pedro el Viejo or the Capilla del Obispo. We’ll uncover a hidden garden, formerly a convent’s orchard, and the Tower and Palace of Los Lujanes, home to a renowned family of Old Madrid. The walls of these places narrate the tale of Madrid’s three cultures and religions.
