Highlights
  • Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple - The town has developed around the Meenakshi Amman Temple, which is built in the Dravidian style with two shrines: one for Lord Shiva and the other for his consort Meenakshi. This temple is a masterpiece of Dravidian architecture and one of the most significant active temples in India. Dedicated to Meenakshi, a form of Parvati known as “the one with fish-shaped eyes,” the wife of Shiva in his Sundareshwara form, it features two shrines, one for each deity. It is one of the most visited holy sites in India, attracting pilgrims who come to marry or purify themselves. The 1000 Pillar Hall inside the temple has pillars so ingeniously constructed that they produce different musical notes when touched. The temple is usually open from 0500 hrs to 1230 hrs and 1600 hrs to 2030 hrs.
  • Thirumalai Nayakar Mahal - Known as the living palace of the Nayak Kings, Thirumalai Nayak Palace was built in the 17th century and is a stunning structure with numerous pillars and domes. Although only a quarter of this marvel remains, its former grandeur can only be imagined.
  • Vandiyur Mariamman Teppakulam - Teppakulam (Temple Tank) is the site of the float festival, located 4 km from the Meenakshi Amman Temple.
  • Gandhi Memorial Museum - The life history of Mahatma Gandhi is depicted through pictures and descriptions. You can also see the cloth he was wearing when he was assassinated.
