Additional Information

Doi Tung is known as ‘Flag Peak’. Historically, the woodland surrounding Doi Tung suffered extensive damage due to the practice of rotational slash-and-burn agriculture. The region was widely recognized for its opium farming. In 1987, the Doi Tung Development Project commenced, inspired by the initiative of the King’s Mother. As a consequence of the Royal Crop Substitution Project, opium farming has been almost entirely eradicated. The tour includes stops at the Mae Fah Luang Gardens and the Royal Villa.

Continuing the journey up to Wat Phra That Doi Tung, located at the summit, this temple is held in the highest reverence by the inhabitants of Chiang Rai and the surrounding areas. Established in 911 A.D., it is said to house the left clavicle of the Buddha within its dual stupas. According to folklore, Phraya Achutarat (the Ruler of Chiang Saen) selected this location for the twin stupas and commanded that a vast flag be hoisted at the mountain’s apex. Signs of this, such as a large hole that once held the flagpole, are still visible at the temple site.
