Discovering the Grandeur of Mafra

Our journey began with a drive to the magnificent Mafra National Palace, a place that truly captures the imagination. As we approached, the sheer scale of the palace was breathtaking. With its 220-meter-long façade, 1200 rooms, and 4700 doors and windows, it was a sight to behold. My children were wide-eyed with wonder, and I could see their minds racing with questions about the history and stories that these walls could tell.

Inside, the ornate basilica and the grand library, home to over 36,000 ancient books, were highlights that sparked curiosity and awe. The library even has its own colony of bats, which fascinated my youngest. It was a perfect blend of education and adventure, as we explored the vast complex and learned about its historical significance. The palace is a testament to the baroque architecture and the rich cultural heritage of Portugal, making it a must-visit for families seeking both fun and learning.

A Step Back in Time at Aldeia Museu Jose Franco

Our next stop was the charming village of Sobreiro, where we visited the Aldeia Museu Jose Franco. This life-size village, crafted by the talented sculptor Jose Franco, was a delightful surprise. The kids were thrilled to explore the miniature shops and houses, each displaying the typical architecture of the region. It was like stepping back in time, and the attention to detail was incredible.

As we wandered through the village, we were able to immerse ourselves in the local culture and traditions. The children enjoyed seeing the clay models and learning about the art of modeling clay. It was a hands-on experience that allowed them to connect with the history and craftsmanship of the area. This stop was not only fun but also educational, providing a unique insight into the region’s past.

Surf and Sun in Ericeira

Our final destination was the picturesque fishing village of Ericeira, known for its stunning coastline and vibrant surf culture. The Ericeira World Surfing Reserve was a highlight, and we spent time at the interpretation center learning about the significance of this area. The kids were fascinated by the idea of a surfing reserve and enjoyed watching the surfers ride the waves.

We strolled through the historical center of Ericeira, with its charming white houses edged in blue and narrow cobbled streets leading to tiny squares. It felt like a Mediterranean village, and the atmosphere was relaxed and inviting. We took a break at one of the local seafood restaurants, where the fresh catch of the day was a treat for the taste buds.

The beaches of Ericeira, with their world-class waves, were a perfect end to our day. The children played in the sand and watched the surfers, while I took in the breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean. It was a day filled with adventure, learning, and family fun, and I left with a heart full of memories and a promise to return.
