- Mahone Bay - Visit Mahone Bay and capture a photo of the renowned three churches, and perhaps explore a few local attractions. Continue to the Lunenburg Historic District. In 1753, many new immigrants were relocated from Halifax to Lunenburg, intended to be the hub of the planned settlement. The initial settlers, led by mariner Ephraim Cook, lived in the town of Lunenburg and had farm lots throughout the peninsula, including Mahone Bay. These settlers were foreign Protestants from Germany, Switzerland, and Montbéliard. The village became well-known for shipbuilding in the 18th century. Mahone Bay’s boat-building history began with the Mi’kmaq, who constructed birch bark canoes. The British initiated the first industrial ship production, establishing sawmills to produce lumber for shipbuilding.
- Lunenburg - The Old Town of Lunenburg is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and National Historic District, recognized as one of the best-preserved colonial settlements in North America. Founded in 1753 and designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995, it offers much to visitors. Historically, Lunenburg’s economy was based on offshore fishing, and today it hosts Canada’s largest secondary fish-processing plant. The town flourished in the late 1800s, with many architectural treasures dating from that period. This vibrant fishing village boasts stunning architecture and a working waterfront that reflect its rich history. Visitors can explore the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic, St. John’s Anglican Church, Lunenburg Academy, hop aboard the famous Bluenose schooner, or stroll through the colorful streets of this UNESCO heritage village. In the 1800s, Lunenburg thrived through shipping, trade, and fishing.
- The Ovens Park - The Ovens Natural Park in Feltzen South is part of the historic site of a Gold Rush over a century ago. This privately owned 190-acre pristine reserve of coastal forest is located on the Atlantic coast of Nova Scotia, along the scenic Lighthouse Route. For centuries, people have been drawn to the park’s incredible beauty, diverse geography, spiritual solace, and fascinating history. Each year, visitors hike the spectacular trails along the cliffs to view the famous sea caves, or “Ovens,” for which the park is named. Owned and operated by the Chapin Family, the Ovens hosts many activities and festivals and offers some of the best family camping on the Nova Scotian coast. The park’s unique geology and dramatic beauty first gained international attention during the 1861 gold rush at the Ovens.
