Additional Information

One of the most contoured mountains in the entire Rift Valley is Mt Longonot (2780m), whose jagged crater edge provides stunning vistas. This quiescent volcano, which surged a formidable 1000m above the scorching valley base, came into being 400,000 years ago and was last active in the 1860s. The park in which it resides only spans 52 square kilometers and was established chiefly to conserve the volcano’s ecosystem. In Maasai language, ‘Longonot’ is derived from ‘Olo Nongot’, translating to ‘Mountain of Many Summits’.

Mount Longonot hike - The driver, Eric, was excellent as the drive to the park is rather long and seems challenging. My guide, Denis was good and was patient while I took many photos. The hike was spectacular and saw some antelope, giraffe, and zebra. A couple parts of the hike are fairly strenuous but not too bad.
