Mount Longonot (2776m), one of the most attractive peaks in the entire Rift Valley, and its jagged crater rim provide spectacular vistas. This dormant volcano, which towers 1000m over the scorching valley floor, came into existence 400,000 years ago and witnessed its last volcanic activity in the 1860s. The park merely occupies a 52 sq km area and serves the sole purpose of preserving the volcano’s ecosystem. ‘Longonot’ originates from the Maasai term ‘Olo Nongot,’ translating to ‘Mountain of Many Summits’.
