The tale of Fouquet, the superintendent of Louis XIV, is renowned worldwide, his downfall brought about by the King’s envy. The construction of the Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte, located in the vicinity of Melun, southeast of Paris, can be deemed as the initial phase in creating Versailles. Louis XIV employed the team assembled by his superintendent of finances, Nicolas Fouquet, including the architect Louis Le Vau, the painter Charles Le Brun and André Le Nôtre who fashioned the gardens.
