A must do for WWII history enthusiasts! - I was recently in Crete with my family and wanted to learn more about the WWII history of the island, so I hired Apostolis and his team at Proper Cretan Guide to take me around for the day on their "Battle of Crete Tour". It was a fantastic, immersive experience that helped me better understand what the Allied forces on the island went through in 1941 as well as the local Cretans during the occupation that followed. For any WWII history buff, I would highly recommend this tour as you get to walk where history was forged and, on this island, many of the locations are unchanged so seeing bullet holes in bridge spans and crawling through abandoned bunkers just adds another level to the adventure. If I'm ever lucky enough to return to Crete, you bet I'll hire Apostolis and Proper Cretan Guide again!

An excellent tour, and would definitely book another if we returned to Crete - We chose a tour to follow the evacuation route of the Allied troops from Chania to Sfakia. Apostolis was an excellent and knowledgeable guide. He tailored the tour to visit sites of particular importance to us. The car was comfortable, with air-con, and Apostolis was a great driver, giving us facts and jokes along the way!

My guide brought History alive for me - As someone with a strong interest in New Zealand's role in the Battle for Crete in May 1941, I was lucky to engage Apostolis as guide for one day to show me around key sites and events in the Maleme/Chania sector. He really brought those few days alive for me as we chatted and explored different spots around the area. His deep knowledge of History impressed me and every question I had was answered with fascinating Insight and detail. I would recommend Apostolis as a guide to anyone interested in this topic.

Crete Hospitality at It's Best - This was simply a fantastic tour. Apostoles was well organized, informative, and very passionate on the subject of WW2. He was able to answer any of my questions not only on WW2 but on Crete culture as well. I also like that he had WW2 era photos of the sites we visited, which helped one imagine what took place. Apostoles also tailored the tour to match my interests and this I greatly appreciated. Overall, this was one of the best tours I have done. No rushing but covered the sites. Apostoles is also a warm and friendly person, therefore making the tour thoroughly enjoyable. Highly recommend!

Excellent. Highly recommended - Apostolis was very knowledgeable on the battle of Crete. He had a passion for history and the battle of Crete. Great communicator with a great sense of humour. As my father was in the battle I had read a lot of it. Apostolis knew more than me and was able to remind me of things I had not remembered. We went to the main sites but also sites that most people other than local historians would know about. I was fasinated as to how close the sites were. The visit to the cemeteries is sobering and a reminder as to the enormity and futility of war.the needless waste of so many young men and women. The roll of the Greek forces and especially the Greek civilians and the hardships and atrocities they suffered was brought home. I would highly recommend this tour with Apistolis.

Brilliant tour of WWII battle sites - I have been travelling to Crete for more than 20 years and I'm familiar with the 1941 Battle of Crete. But my tour with Apostolis was an eye opener in so many different ways. He's not just a guide spouting the same old tired lines but a historian for whom the battle is his passion and that came across. I learned many new things about the battle and the Cretan resistance that followed. His knowledge and eloquence was such that I ended up recording a 50-minute programme with him for Radio New Zealand. I would definitely recommend Proper Cretan Guide. I will be booking his tours again in the future.

Battlefield tour Chania region - Operation Mercury - We had the pleasure of doing a full day battlefield excursion with Apostolis as our guide. After being picked up our hotel we drove directly to the Maleme airfield for the first stop of the day. The main focus of the tour is the invasion day of 20th of May 1941 and the following days in the Chania battle sector. After Maleme, we visited the German war cemetery, the Patanias bunker museum, the village of Galatas, where ferocious close combat action took place in the streets, Prison valley, bay of Souda, the Commonwealth war cemetery in Souda bay and 42nd street where the famous counterattack by the New Zealander’s took place. Apostolis with grades in history and archology is very knowable about the subject and is more or less the perfect companion if you consider to do a serious battlefield study of the battle for Crete 1941. All in all an very interesting day, Highly recommended for war history buffs or if you have ancestors of those whom served on both sides of this tragic event in history.
