During World War II, over 15000 German servicemen perished on Greek soil. The German military graveyard in Maleme (Deutschen Soldatenfriedhof in Maleme) is one of two such burial grounds in Greece. The strategic point of Height 107, within Maleme, played a decisive role in the conflict; whoever held this position commanded the airport of Maleme and its adjacent areas. In fact, the German capture of this point led to their subsequent control of Crete Island. The vista from this place is simply breathtaking. Moreover, the War Cemetery at Souda Bay, situated amidst splendid natural surroundings at Souda Port, is the site of annual memorials to honor World War II victims. Throughout the calendar year, it is frequently visited by travellers, primarily from Australia and New Zealand.
