A Journey Through Time and Taste

As a wildlife photographer with a penchant for adventure, I often find myself drawn to places where history and nature intertwine. The Korcula & Peljesac Tour seemed like the perfect opportunity to explore the rich tapestry of Croatia’s past while indulging in its culinary delights. Our journey began in the charming town of Mali Ston, where the air was thick with the scent of the sea and the promise of discovery.

Our guide, Miho, was a treasure trove of stories, weaving tales of the region’s history with personal anecdotes from his time in the military. His humor and insight set the tone for the day as we traveled in a comfortable, air-conditioned minivan along the stunning coastline. The drive itself was a visual feast, with the azure waters of the Adriatic Sea on one side and the rugged hills of the Peljesac Peninsula on the other.

Our first stop was the medieval town of Ston, renowned for its ancient salt pans and oyster farms. As we wandered through the narrow streets, Miho regaled us with tales of the town’s strategic importance and its role in the salt trade. The sight of the imposing city walls, stretching as far as the eye could see, was a testament to the town’s storied past.

Discovering Korcula’s Secrets

After a brief stop in Ston, we continued our journey to the island of Korcula. A short ferry ride brought us to this enchanting island, where we were met by Eddy, a local guide with a passion for history. Eddy’s enthusiasm was infectious as he led us through the cobbled streets of Korcula’s old town, sharing stories of Venetian architecture and the island’s most famous son, Marco Polo.

The highlight of our tour was undoubtedly the visit to the Cathedral of San Marco, with its intricate carvings and towering bell tower. As we stood in the shadow of this magnificent structure, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe at the craftsmanship and dedication that had gone into its creation. Eddy’s tales of the island’s past brought the history of Korcula to life, making it easy to imagine the bustling port town as it was centuries ago.

After our tour, we enjoyed a leisurely lunch at a seaside restaurant, savoring the flavors of hand-rolled Zrnovo pasta paired with a crisp glass of Posip wine. The gentle sea breeze and the sound of waves lapping against the shore provided the perfect backdrop for our meal, a moment of tranquility amidst our day of exploration.

A Toast to Tradition

With our appetites sated, we returned to the mainland and made our way to the Peljesac region, renowned for its vineyards and winemaking traditions. Our destination was a family-owned winery, where we were greeted by the owner, a gracious lady with a wealth of knowledge about the area’s viticultural history.

As we sampled a selection of wines, she shared stories of the winery’s evolution from the days of communist rule to the present, where her sons now oversee the daily operations. Each sip of wine was a testament to the resilience and passion of the winemakers, a reflection of the land’s unique terroir and the family’s dedication to their craft.

The day concluded with a scenic drive back to Dubrovnik, the setting sun casting a golden glow over the landscape. As we arrived in the city, I reflected on the day’s adventures, grateful for the opportunity to experience the rich history and vibrant culture of this remarkable region.
